They all carry nasty Tomahawk missiles and related, and they aren't bound to an airfield like aircraft. Ohio-class subs also have Trident missiles, which are essentially a rape nuke.

Actually, they are a separate branch, but they fall under the Secretary of the Navy. There are two distinct chains of command: the Staff (under the Commandant) and the Secretariat (under the SecNav).GunSlinger OIF II wrote:

@jord -- the Marines are not a branch of the US Military.
And if I were king for a day, we would have one giant Marine Corps...Air, Land, and Sea forces all trained, equipped, and organized together from the word go. Then we would get away from petty Service parochialism that ultimately detracts from warfighting capability.

In all srsness though, Air Force. Way overbudgeted, and as it stands they have very little planned for the future. They only have 3 new aircraft in the works, 2 of which aren't Combat. They spend way too much on stuff we don't need. You could disband them, and give all their shit to the Army/Marines, who could use it a helluva lot better. No I didn't just compliment the Army. You're seeing things.

F-35 (executive agent for DoD and foreign sales...gobs of $$$)
KC-45
Long range bomber replacement
CSAR-X
DoD executive agent for space (where most of the $$ goes)
Keeping old-assed planes flying is obscenely expensive. What's the average age of the M-1s in the field?
Is there waste? Of course. As there is in the Army, Navy, and USMC. Complain about the AF's budget the next time CAS saves your ass or on-call interdiction takes out that fighting position that you can't get to. Or think about why no US military member has been killed by enemy airpower since early in the Korean War.

kinda need them all
They should divvy up the Air Force between NASA (SAC functions), the Army (CAS functions), and the Navy (ship/shore functions). Their DIA contribution should just be secretly executed, and that evangelical university that passes as the AF Academy should be burned to the ground.
Instead of discussing whether or not a branch should go, why not aim for streamlining the bureaucracy of ALL branches? It's not that any one branch is worth less, it's just that every branch is bloated with red tape.

And we can start with the absolutely worst offenders by a huge margin...bye zoomies.Turquoise wrote:

Are you referring to our ridiculously expensive new aircraft or is that slang for something else?
I think that 'zoomies' is a nickname for the air force.Turquoise wrote:

I can't foresee the collapse of any of our branches anytime soon.

Coast Guard would be my choice. They're fine men and women, but they could just get jobs in the Navy and we could have the Navy defend our coasts. Would YOU try to traffic drugs into a harbor guarded by a destroyer?

The navy has, boats, planes and ground troops... what else do you need?
Get rid of the other two, then change the name of the navy to 'army' and you're all set.

Zoomies in Navy terms meant Radiation. At least that was what we called it.SenorToenails wrote:

"The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation" - Barack Obama (a freshman senator from Illinios)
Zoomies is actually a nickname for AF Academy grads.SenorToenails wrote:

Try landing a plane with enough range and payload to strike the interior of a country from on an aircraft carrier. Then you'll see what else you need.DrunkFace wrote:

Your model has already been applied...in the PRC.
Changing the name isn't the issue here...the issue is people are arguing for the removal of the service. With that goes your planes, tactics, many of the weapons, etc.

What are "SAC functions"? Arguing that the A-10 should go to the Army is quite different than arguing that the Service as a whole should be disbanded.GorillaTicTacs wrote:

As I said before, try launching (and recovering) something with the legs and payload to hit something strategic in nature from a ship.
I'm sure there are no issues with evangelicals in any other branches or their academies. Of course you overlook the fact that people got fired and reforms put in place to fix that nonsense.
Clearly you have a beef with the AF...care to share your feelings?
