Doesn't even matter. People will still use electricty even if they turn as much shit as they can off. The biggest power consumptions come from things like your refigorator, furnace, and other heavy duty products.HurricaИe wrote:
Anyways, instead of organizing a single hour of the thousands of hours we're still gonna live through, why don't we do something like research better energy sources? Hydrogen, LED lights, nuclear. I understand the gesture, but there's way better things people could do instead of turning off lights.Mek-Izzle wrote:

coz the whole earth hour thing is to raise awareness, not to save power (well kinda but not as much as the awareness factor)

Yes, and how many hours are there in a year again? One hours will certainly help.

1 year = 8 765.81277 hours or 1 hour is about 0.0114% of a year

In the time it takes most power plants to lower production to accomodate a drop in consumption, that hour, and thirteen additional hours will have passed.Spark wrote:

Hey, I can turn my lights off, but the power station is still generating the electricity, still churning out the same amont of CO2...
Meh, all the electricity in Iceland is 100% green and reusable. No point
pretty much the same here. Our bulk of electricity comes from nuclear power and the peaks are supplied by hydroelectric power. Yay for cheap and clean energyPBAsydney wrote:

Good thing I live in the other 99.99% of the world or I would feel real guilty right now for leaving my tv, sound system, pc and lighting on last night.Spark wrote:

Nuclear power is a green power source, but it's not reusable since the earth only has so much of Uranium. (Plus that nasty nuclear waste)max wrote:

Hydroelectricity here for all the electricity and geothermal power for all house heating (really hand, no need for a water heater, we get 70°C water straight from the ground into the house).
Wait. How did those cities get on this list?
They probably nominated themselves in a publicity stunt to get people to like them and get grants from the government, happens all the time in my city and we only have 100,000 people....jord wrote:

I don't even know where my power comes from. Probably coal. I'm pretty sure there's a nuclear plant in Maryland but it's a fair bit away from where I live.PBAsydney wrote:

And that kinda makes me wanna move to Iceland.
They've banned energy drinks in Icleand. It's the health freak capitol of the world.HurricaИe wrote:

And it's cold.
I wonder how my work would react if I hit all the breakers at 8 PM tonight..
With only 2% of all greenhouse gases coming from human sources? I'z not turning off the power, besides I can see a lot of injuries resulting from people turning lights off and falling down stairs and walking into stuff.

Everything is banned here, even airsoft (got busted in customs with an airsoft M1911 last summer) .jord wrote:

Talking about health freaks, what do you expect when a cheeseburger at macdonalds costs $3, no wonder people aren't quite as fat here as in the US.
Wow, I think I just derailed this thread complete.

That's gonna be real freaky if a bunch of people do it.

At 8pm tonight is Earth Hour (well, 8pm on the 29th if you're in America). Basically for one hour, you turn off your lights and all non-essential electrical appliances.

New Delhi, India
How to help combat global warming:
Turn off your lights
Hold in your farts
Put diapers on cows
Elect Al Gore president
Drive a Prius
