The lack of electrical consumption in the North American power grid will cause the appliances in non-participating cities like mine to get increasingly faster, glow increasingly brighter until ---- Kaaaappooowww!!!!

I was thinking of switching off my power at the mains, and going all paganistic for an hour. I've invited the family over, there is a chance now that everyone will actually talk with one another.

No thanks, instead I'll just turn on every light, tv, computer, dishwasher, washer, dryer, garbage disposal, blender, toaster, in the house. Just because I can.

Anyways, instead of organizing a single hour of the thousands of hours we're still gonna live through, why don't we do something like research better energy sources? Hydrogen, LED lights, nuclear. I understand the gesture, but there's way better things people could do instead of turning off lights.

Hey, I can turn my lights off, but the power station is still generating the electricity, still churning out the same amont of CO2...

Supply-and-demand on an instantaneous basis. If not many people are using power, less power is produced.

pft, I have an assignment to do, no way I'm turning of the lights (or computer). And anyway I had my 'earth hour' 2 weeks ago when we had a 3 hour black out.

Power stations, such as those in the Hunter region north of Sydney (Canberra also gets its power from there?), aren't able to just turn their generators on an off on a whim. I understand that to fire up a generator, it takes something in the order of a day... not nearly instantaneous when compared to the hour time frame of 'earth hour'.

Anyway, it's these coal burning plants that provide the base-load for the energy grid. NSW/VIC does have instantaneous capacity - the Snowy Mountains Scheme - to deal with peak demand... which is usually at night and early morning. Earth Hour, being at night, would then first cut into the peak energy requirements... which are powered by hyrdo-electric power, not coal.

Although there might be some tree huggers roaming the streets who'll throw a rock through your window if they see a light on.

Oh fuck them. Anyways, this thing is probably gonna cause more harm then good in the long run, fucking up the power grid and all. Not to mention, the electrical devices still on will run the risk of being damaged by a surge.
