I think cqc (semi auto) sniper is the only way to play sniper right. You don't need to hide 200m from 2-3 medic opponents to feel safe, you just shoot at those biatches even when they are 20m from you you're still a threat for them.

All that long range thingy with bolt action rifle may be fun, but it's not very much useful, you desperately need to keep distance and cornered by 3 medics you're f00ked.

Agreed. 1 or 2 in a team might be ok. But yeah, snipers need to be proactive and unless the player is shit hot at firing and hitting with a bolt action close up then swapping to pistol and finishing off a target in CQ then they contribute far less to the cause.

Exactly.

As for the tank - of course it takes more skill. A good tank driver can win the entire round for his team! (if the commander drops crates and several infantry player are close by).
On Ghost Town, my tank is a threat to attack helis, they have hard times
I noticed how you went for the post that agreed with your opinion, and completely left out the others ones.

I wouldn't say I'm useless.  Most of the time I only snipe, well, I only snipe.

I'm not afraid to go CQC with my sniper rifle.  Infact, I piss off alot of people from doing that especially when using the M24 or L96.

But the people who trash-talk other people's play style is way worse in CoD4.

This thread = FAIL. Snipers are an integral part of any battlefield. Considering that BF2 is a battlefield simulator, it would be real stupid to leave out the sniper kit.

I only play sniper with my l96 and ive done so on karkand etc and i find if you can dragshot quickly you run into no fuss.

picture the senario, say zatar, 3 medics running at one sniper, start 500m away, whos going to win ?

The point is, a sniper can dispatch his enemies from long range BEFORE it gets to a cqc situation.

What you also forget is, i can spot a tank from 500m away in some maps so my teams helicopter can send a tow at it. replace tank for jet, soldier, sniper etc.

They piss me off because most all of them run around like dipshits laying clays, retreating, throwing nades instead of using rifle/pistol when you run into them. I have seen a few snipers that are actually good at it (shooting), but they dont make up for the shit suckers that make up for the rest

got to take the bitter with the sweet.  There are some really good players out there that are really skilled.

I love to use my pistol but I chase after people with a knife instead. Claymores are so unreliable sometimes especially grenades.

I like to be in knife fights but people turn around and unload their entire magazine in me lol

Your rant has nothing to do with snipers, it has to do with shitty teamates.

No matter the kit if they just sit there and do nothing its anoying. There are plenty of good snipers out there that help the team. And a sniper is needed at many points of contact.

Sure it sucks when half your team goes sniper and everyone wants to play Tom Berenger, but fuck it nothing you can do about it, and complaining on how others play makes you look like an asshole.

I tend to find anyone who is a medic and doesn't know about the shock paddles in their kit extremely annoying, and also the guys in my squad who (A) don't follow me, (B) don't pick up my kit if I'm dead to revive me and C if they go some stupid kit like engineer or assault or sometimes even sniper. hence why I call my squad NO TARDS!! and kick anyone who don't follow the above instructions. I can be just about as good as a average sniper with the L85 so why abandon my trustworthy medic kit? Im getting to the same point with both the ak101 and the m16 too, its all about knowing where to aim on the cross hair and moving before the other guy gets his cross hairs on you. Ok if its a stand off on karkand then the L96 can come in handy but ill be just as happy with a L85 with descent hit reg....

Wow, Choppers fire TOWs now? Too much inf for you. Also, it's very hard to spot things over 500 M away (Vehicles) I try at 300 meters with the scope and fail most times, no idea why, perhaps BF2 doesn't like you spotting whilst scoped.

More skill?  You've gotta be kidding, right?

Of all the vehicles available, a tank doesn't even rate in the top half for play difficulty.  Couple that with tankers that play on maps that don't have choppers or jets (like Strike at Karkand, Warlord, Road to Jalalabad, and Great Wall) it really becomes ridiculously overrated to score kills in armor.

It takes a truly inept player to screw up using a tank.

True, a good tank driver can win an entire round for a team.  However, a good opposing tank driver can easily trump an enemy tanker.  Of course, that's if he's not point-whoring against infantry.

To me, a good tank driver is the one that pays attention to the UAVs, and "Enemy tank spotted" warnings, to destroy enemy tanks.  Otherwise, dicing up infantry ranks as amateur, IMHO.

A properly trained sniper can be deadly on maps like Wake where the view distance is very high and there are many still targets. Of course, the vast majority of BF2 snipers think bulletdrop doesn't apply.

There are some reasons why using a tank successfully is harder then playing infantry. And then there are reasons why it is easier, I'll list them both.

Easy:
  • Has near on unlimited ammo with no need to 're-load'
  • Has a main cannon which does lots of damage and lots of splash damage, but is also very slow firing.
  • MG has no deviation and does lots of dmg. So it kills what ever you point it at.
  • Is basically invincible to 4 of the 7 classes.
  • Is strong and can take multiple hits from almost every weapon.
  • You can move and shoot with no loss in accuracy (if you know how to lead).
Basically it is a strong armoured beast which can take a lot of damage and return even more.
  • Its massive, in comparison to an infantry soldier it is huge, which makes it easy to hit, easy to see and therefore easy to kill.
  • Manoeuvrability is low, it can not strafe, it can not jump, its extremely slow in starting and changing directions.
  • Moving over rough terrain changes where you were aiming and sometimes a hill is necessary just to hit someone.
  • Aiming is limited, Not only is the gun slow to move, it can only move in a limited arc and can not shoot down or up making it impossible to hit some things.
  • On maps with planes it will have a nice big highlighting box around it , while infantry can remain anonymously hidden.
  • There are 3 kits which are basically dedicated to killing tanks.
  • While in a tank you are (or at least should be) the main target of almost all the enemy.
  • Repairing is slow, unlike infantry which can be instantly healed, tanks take a long time to repair.

Basically you are a big slow sitting duck with everyone out to get you.

It's all relative though, trying to drive a tank with an ace pilot or chopper crew is like running a marathon with your legs tied together. Even against good infantry its extremely hard to stay alive as they can put 3 AT rockets up your ass before you can even tell where they are let alone move your turret to kill them (especially if they are firing from different locations). 1 AT on a building is almost impossible to hit yet can rain death apon the armour below. Of course if you're playing against idiots who keep choosing kits which can't kill tanks on maps like Karkand then there is nothing easier then racking up 50+ kills 0 deaths, but then they deserve it.
