Hahahaha!! That's exactly what I was thinking!!

Maybe she's too poor to afford a scanner? Or maybe she got in some sort of horrible accident and they have to rely on older pictures of her because nowadays she looks like a complete vegetable and has suffered many third-degree burns and requires extensive reconstructive surgery, hence her application for a scholarship because the family can't afford to both send her to college and buy her a new face???

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity.
