But yes, we'd trounce them just based on resources and power alone. Morally and ethically I would support the West. We've had a dirty hand dabbling in the Middle East since God/Allah-knows-when... but I don't think our (corrupt?) dealings in the Middle East fairly demands a world-wide war or crisis.

I am not sure I can agree with you completely here. They are able to unify (over religion) to some degree if there is a common enemy that prohibits them from advancing "their" religion. Now I do not mean Islam as a whole, I mean each individual interpretation of Islam. If the threat from outside is greater than a rival, they will band together to fight the outsider. Once the threat is less than the threat of the rival, then they will turn on each other again.

Its like saying the Baathists and Al Qaeda were butt buddies, or that the PLO and Hezbollah are the same group because they hate Israel and hang out at the same pubs, or that the Saudi princes and mujahadeen love each other (they need each other, but thats a different topic), or that somehow the Malaysian, Indian, and Chechnyan muslims will pool resources to launch a real invasion of anything.
