*Note* In case you don't know what Sonar is...
Sonar technology involves bouncing sound waves off underwater objects to determine what they are. Brantley said the training is needed so technicians can learn how to identify whether an object is an animal, an obstruction or a vessel.
Basically it's underwater Radar.

The two sides of the argument (in a nutshell):

Pro-Sonar
Two officials of the Navy League, a civilian organization that supports the service, said the Navy needs the training to detect hostile submarines.....According to the Navy study, sonar is essential because of the worldwide proliferation of modern, quiet diesel submarines.
Against Sonar
Keith Jenkins, a marine scientist who worked with the Navy on the study, said it might cause the animals to stop feeding or move out of an area. In some cases, he said, the sound might keep them from hearing normal sounds around them.

Passive sonar is essential to subs, if you use active (Ping), everyone knows where you are and you die.  Active sonar is considered a very risky thing to use and generally only as a last resort.

Ships on the other hand need active sonar because the ships own noise is too much and blanks out passive detection...........

a very touchy subject... good poll.  i null voted, as i really don't know all the facts.  can they conclusively prove this hurts the fishies?  i'm all in favor of doing what we need to do to protect ourselves, but at what cost, mr. garrison, at what cost?

Me too.  Bad question on this forum where youngsters don't understand migratory patterns or ecology..of course older people don't either that much.  So without knowing everything, it's hard to choose.  My obvious question is, is there constant sonar sweeps along the coast 24/7?  is it necessary?

How does Japan fair with it in their whaling/fishing industry and the obvious sub activity around their waters?

Eh... sonars are like the headlights of cars.having one is a must.
Otherwise, you'll run into a whale and sink.

Subs are useless, so I'd say yes, limit them, get them out of the water alltogether.

I don't really care. Then again neither do I care about the Japanese and their Whale antics. It seems that some people will defend the USN but deplore the Japanese, sure they are on different scales, but don't be hypocritical now.

Well, apparently, people can be uninformed about the other side of the issue, as well:

While I realize its not the Cold War anymore, you are running the risk of having a enemy sub off our shores now. Anyways, I think this is just retarded. Fuck the whales.

No?  The fish can cope, and we have bigger things to worry about than a few sound waves.

The new sonar that's been causing whales and dolphins to die should be limited to testing and times of war.

Dolphin and whales are people too.
