Exactly. That's the big problem - the US buys our products like there's no tomorrow so unless we diversify by trading more heavily with emerging markets like India and China, we're screwed. The one possible saving grace is that China may just carry the global economy in the event of a US downturn (according to 'The Economist' magazine anyway).

That was a totally different scenario from what's happening in Iraq, the US doesn't steal all your possesions, the US doesn't kill you if you say something nasty, the US doesn't starve you to death. The Iraqi's are at a relative peace for now, so you could say this is just 'peace' and not a peace by subjecting people to your will.

I don't get it why people constantly refer certain things to WWII, it was so different nothing in today's life is even remotely comparable to that.

the problem is that the american people are oblivious and they don't care. They think that the government will fix it, and they will continue spending like they do now. Apathy is main problem. Most americans would rather watch a story on celebrity babies than watch a little news. It disgusts me. However, we're not entirely fucked...the US has gone through similar situations in the past.

Instead of solving this important issues of the US economy mister bush is in the middle east threatning iran again and kissing israel and other arab countries ass. Don´t you ask yourself why?

I know i'm not american but when the US economy falls shit will hit the vent for all other countries in the world. I don't know what will appen when the US can't afford it's military. We might see sensitive military equipment falling to israel and arab hands cause that's were the money is. Those country's will join their economic boom with a military boom and then all those dictadors the US put in power in the middle east will probably fuck up the world bad.

The solution to the problem is not easy and it seems that the cure might kill the pacient, because if ron paul comes to president what is most unlikely, the return of US troops home would skyrocket unemployment and leave many US abroad investments burning.

You have to ask yourself what is the right thing to do and what candidate talks about your real issues not the issues of a small elite. If you're smart enough and love your country you should vote for Ron Paul.

The U.S. outlook is grim.  But why is everyone on DAST so hell bent to be on one side or the other?

Is there not a chance for middle ground?  I see the U.S. taking a massive economic hit that changes the way the country works, changes it global strength and authority, but I doubt we will be destroyed as a powerful encomic nation.  Maybe some tight times ahead for the majority of America, but I doubt we will all be living in hunger, pining away for the glory days of electricity and running water.

Maybe I'm the one that's over reacting , but some people take it too doom and gloom.  Not just in this thread either.

The way I see it, we will enter a severe recession, probably worse than the 80's. Coupled with some other conditions, it will probably lead to a mass exodus of the dollar, possibly resulting in hyper inflation. Wheat rose 25% in one day a while back. Economists worry that once the dollar goes below the 80 mark that it could fall into a free fall, but I think it has more way to go before it does. It is at 72.92 currently, but foreigners are doing their best to move their dollars into other assets in a clever manner, preventing them from causing a mass sell-off of dollars inadvertently.

I'll go into detail later, but the bull market of the 90's is OVER. The cheer leaders for the economy can stop making fools out of themselves. Of course, even under severe economic conditions, the US will still be much more comfortable to live in than other nations. The only thing that worries me is the entire banking system being destroyed by derivatives, in that case America would morph into a road warrior scenario.

Hey don't get me wrong i'm not talking about hunger and other essentials laking in america now or in the near future.

I'm talking about people loosing homes, jobs and even their bank savings. I'm not the only one thinking this, if u look for it you will find many experts saying the same for years.

This is the beggining of a cycle, bad news will bring more bad news and they will come back for more bad news. When companies are loosing money they fire people, when people have no money they don't buy the companies goods so the companies fires even more people. When you sum this with inflation that is appening around the world, the dollar weakness and your unbalanced budget well it's catastrofic.

The 80's will look like a walk in the park people. Be smart, banks will fail. They don't tell u what banks so if i were to lived in america i would cash in all my money from the banks and put some in gold. People in wall street are doing it! If u don't do it you will be the one's paying the bill.

I wouldn't be wasting my time talking here if i didn't wanted to help you, at least the good honest americans.

I'm not defending the US, but aren't you being a bit naive? "Torture" was not invented by the US and is/has been used since the time men had wars. It is just that now it is a popular news topic. Similar arguments can be made about the other points you mentioned.

I'm from Portugal. And yes this country is fucked up. I'm not saying stuff are perfect were i live and i express this with my vote and inform other people.
