This is the new IE8 beta. I've heard it's a lot faster than IE7, and Microsoft has finally made it standards-compliant (remember it's beta so there are probably kinks, but their goal is to make IE standards-compliant). I'm gonna download it when I get home... even if it's a buggy POS, since I never use IE... this could possibly change that

Damned if I know... the main advantage is that if these guys actually make it standards compliant, then the web will be better because then (I think) all the major browsers (IE, Opera, Firefox, Safari) will be standards-compliant. So no more "This site designed for IE"

I still don't want IE. Why support Microshit when you can support open source?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Why fix things that aren't broken. Firefox 2 works fine for me, I haven't ever really had any problems with IE7 or Opera either. And I don't really see anything new in Firefox 3 etc.. so what the fuck is going on

omfg... it is so slow.  and it keeps crashing.  laaaame

so far there is no visual difference.  it has an "IE7 emulation mode" which is pretty (ahem) lame.  some menus are different...

lol there is a "work offline" option right on the tools menu.  now i can surf the web without an internet connection!  yes!

Meh.

It's faster than IE7, but definatly slower than FF with FasterFox.

And Vbulletin forums are fucked up on it.

What if... yes, what if... Microsoft made an awesome browser? If IE 8 was better than FireFox?

You don't pay for it (like many people say, for some reason), it's a simple install...... Why not try?

Installed it, really haven't noticed a difference except the text is somehow easier to read from the blurred shit it had before.
Pages display the same as Opera and FF finally.
It's still substantially faster than BloatFox even with the FasterFox add on.
Haven't noticed any of the errors everyone is complaining of so fuck knows what they're on about.
Basically it's more or less the same as before. I'll stick to Opera and use this for testing.

A thought: do old websites designed only for IE with non-compliant code now not work properly in IE8?

Microsoft's compliance of standards is a relative term.  Even Balmer said that IE8 will be as standards compliant as they can make it but if they can't then they'll make changes.

Microsoft is only touting standards now because so many have bitched at them for it.  I suspect IE8 will not be a standards compliant browser, Microsoft loves to reuse old code trees (I've seen Win98 dialogs in Vista FFS) so I highly doubt they'll start a whole new development code base to ensure compliance.

I'm sure IE8 and 9 will get Microsoft close to catching up with the others in the standards compliance department. They've already taken a big step with IE8, breaking most websites relying on IE < 8 kinks in IE8 native mode.

No serious browser is fully standards compliant, but hopefully an IE aiming for compliance will force other development teams into focusing more on compliance, rather what they're doing today, which is more or less sitting back with their arms crossed and all agreeing that at least they're better than IE.
