What was it that happened the last time a state(s) decided to secede from the U.S.?  Wasn't it the bloodiest war our country has ever seen?  Oh, details, who really cares.

Oh yeah, I just saw something that tweaked my opinion. They can secede, but I don't want any of them coming here. F that. Stay somewhere on the West Coast. We don't want a bunch of damned granola hippies voting socialist here. I'll only be for them seceding if we can do it at the same time and close our border to immigration. - Texas... sweet...

Yes!  Take california, and welcome to it!  Of course, there are more people moving out of California now than are moving into it.  It is the only state in the country with a declining population.  Not only should you make it a seperate country, you should prevent people from leaving.  That way they can't move here and drive up our prices for property here in Texas.
That's incorrect.  In fact, if you include illegals, California is the second fastest growing state (numerically).  Texas is the fastest.

Percentage wise, Arizona is the fastest growing state, but even by that measure, California is still one of the five fastest growing states.

Still, the majority of California's growth is from immigration.  There are record numbers of "natives" moving out of the state into much more affordable states like Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, and Arizona.
Yes, but you have to include illegal immegration to account for it.  And Texas is the #1 destination for people fleeing the Peoples Republic of California, mostly due to our low property values (well, the land doesn't cost as much), and the fact that we have a rapidly growing tech industry; not to mention a (still rather tiny but) growing movie industry.  Oh, and no state income tax.

Oh, that was economics too.  The federals couldn't lose their breadbasket, could they?

The same economics applies to California today.

Taxes are certainly far lower in Texas than in California, and land is definitely cheaper.  I'd much rather live in Dallas than L.A., for sure.  California is still the second fastest growing state numerically when it comes to legal citizens as well (Texas is again #1).

As a side note, the 10 fastest growing states by percentage according to the latest Census Bureau info are...

1. Nevada 2.93%
2. Arizona 2.81%
3. Utah 2.55%
4. Idaho 2.43%
5. Georgia 2.17%
6. North Carolina 2.16%
7. Texas 2.12%
8. Colorado 2%
9. Wyoming 1.96%
10. South Carolina 1.79%

I was wrong about California with respect to %.  They are the 25th fastest growing state at 0.84%.  Still, they did gain 303,343 people (legal citizens) over the last year.

Also, Rhode Island and Michigan actually lost people.  Rhode Island lost 3,809 while Michigan lost 30,500.

All stats used here represent the period between July of 2006 and July of 2007.

Okay, granted.  But really, now many people have to move to Nevada to make up almost 3%?  Seriously, the first major populated state on that list is Georgia.

True...  this is why I generally pay more attention to numerical growth, but I found the % rankings interesting too.  It's hard to fathom that 496,000 people moved to Texas between July of 2006 and July of 2007.  That's fucking amazing...
