If the Poles don't want it, it won't go in. Simple as that.

Putin already gave a great alternative...Azerbijan or some other hell hole that needs a boost to their South.  Perfectly placed to intercept any "strays" fired by terrorists.  Unfortunately, the stated reasons for wanting that shield aren't the actual reasons, so that kind of compromise plan just won't do.

So...if you know what the actual reasons are, please share them.

Actual reasons are obvious, punk the emerging Russia by placing the missile shield on European soil, sparking Cold War II because the War on Terrorism is about to go the way of the War on Drugs and the current cash cow might dry up a bit.

Oh, of course.

Obviously.

Or it could be something like...I don't know...providing some level of missile defense for European allies.

For GorillaTicTacs:

Where do you get your defense industry as a percentage of GDP information? Does it provide any of that info for countries other than the US?

The missile shield in question here is not for the US...it's for Europe. mmmkay?

Having a large defense industry does not equate to needing or wanting war. It equates to having a large defense industry. Like other countries in the world do (France, China, Russia, Israel, etc.)

That tidbit of info isn't anywhere on the US page...so my question goes back to TicTacs.

Russia has said it may target its missiles at Ukraine if its neighbour joins Nato and accepts the deployment of the US missile defence shield.
Dude, I never wanted to admit it, but these guys are nuts.

4.06% (2005 est.)  would be more now.

That's defense spending as a percentage of GDP, not the percentage of the GDP that is produced by the defense industry. Even if it were, it certainly isn't the 11% claimed by GTT...so the question still stands.

It was somewhat true ~10 years ago.  Since then defense spending has increased dramatically.

They fire missiles at us, we shoot them down. We fire missiles at them...they have nothing.
(and vice versa)

Of course they are going to see that as a threat: its a threat to their own country and offensive/defensive capabilities should war ever erupt again.
Its all about having an ace up your sleeve, to which they might as well have a ten as it wont be able to match up.

This kind of thing always makes me think of "The Sum of all Fears". Damn good film.

Russia is just fluffing their feathers. . . .

They dont have close to the clout they used to have during the Cold War and they are trying to test our patience.  Putin is a totalitarian dick and is trying to resurect a sense of nationalism amongst Russians.  Lots of Russians dont trust him/like him, and if anything cant wait till his days are over (very similar to most Americans views of Bush).

I am worried about China not Russia. . . .  Russia had their day and they blew it! China is just warming up, and the USA and Europe need to be ready to counter that new communist threat!
