I've browsed around the forums to see if anyone's had an error like mine, but no luck. I find it rather hard to describe exactly what's wrong with my sound issues, but from what I can tell, the game has absolutely forfeited the ability to take distance into account for sound. Directional sound works fine, but every sound effect sounds like it's right on top of me at all times. Even a helicopter on the other side of the map, or someone shooting 5 blocks away, sounds like it's right next to me. And artillery is the worse, because when both commanders use it, it ends up being an extremely shrill artillery bombardment noise.

Anyone have similar problems to this perhaps? For reference, I have a simple Realtek AC'97 soundcard with fully updated drivers and a fully updated BF2. This is the only game I have such a problem with, and it's really game destroying for me, even if it sounds simple.

Hmmm, have you tested your speakers via Realteks Soundman? Should be located in taskbar. Maybe you have the speakers plugged into the wrong ports.

Realtek released a newer driver recently, after trying daddofdeath's idea, perhaps upadte.

Soundman test works perfectly fine, and so does every other game I've played. And I updated the drivers as of yesterday in an attempt to solve the problem.

3D audio works fine. Directional audio is completely fine. But it's like the sounds in BF2 fail to calculate the distance the origin of the sound is from me, and thus everything sounds as if it's right on top of me.

Only way to know for sure is a reinstall.

Reinstall seemed to fix the issue. Pretty odd just the same.
