Scuse me? Sprint Cup?

Ok ok, I know that sponsorship is necessary to pay the bills in racing. But do we have to keep changing the name of the top series in NASCAR?

1 - Winston Cup just sounded better and, no, it didn't make little kids pick up cigs.

2 - I could put up with Nextel Cup, that sounded ok.

3 - It can't be the Sprint Cup no matter how much money Sprint wants to pay for the publicity because of the fact that sprint racing is a completely different series. Their name over the series will make me more likely NOT to buy one of their stupid phones so their plan has failed already.

What do the rest of you NASCAR fans think?

The reason they changed it to the Sprint Cup is because Nextel was bought by Sprint a few years ago.

I agree 100% Stingray, I have thought about it for months off and on, and I just cannot wrap my mind around "Sprint Cup Series". It sounds small and cheap imo.
"Nextel Cup" was bad enough.
And yeah, when I'm discussing anything about NASCAR with anyone, I still refer to it as "Winston Cup"...and I don't care who like it, or tries to correct me hehe. Most of those are newer fans.

Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte N.C. will always to me be "Charlotte", not bloody "Lowe's"...

NASCAR are in the throws of change (or were last year...) the fan base is expanding, TV's are tuning in, in ever increasing numbers...they probably need a bit of change...I stress "bit"

What we have always known as the "Busch Series" will now be the "Nationwide Series". Yes, the great beer monster known as Anheiser Busch couldnt, or didnt want to afford the primary sponsorship bill, after 25 years.

I know NASCAR has got to pay the bills, but when you proclaim and can demand $70 million for the title sponsorship, you eliminate a lot...a LOT of potential sponsors. The TV rights were ridiculous as well if I remember correctly.

I have watched NASCAR racing since the mid 80's, I'm a dyed in the wool Earnhardt Sr. fan (...3...), I dont miss races on TV, and I go to at least one (Bristol-August...'cause the night is the time to race) each year. I live only 15 minutes away from the track, so its the cheapest, and the best race on the circuit.
When Dale was killed in Daytona, I came within an ace of not bothering to watch NASCAR anymore, but I figured Mr. Earnhardt wouldnt have wanted that...so I continued...
But tbh, this year will make it or break it for me, so many changes in 2007, so many things about "new" NASCAR policy I disagree with...the COT...Jr. moving to Hendrick...
For me, many things need to fall into place this year, or my personal career as a NASCAR fan may be laying next to my Winston Cup Series flags...

Didn't mean anything by that btw. Yes, Dale Earnhardt Sr. was the #3 car currently driven by Kevin Harvick but they changed the number.

Too much money involved in sports imo, and I think it's much worse in the US, it ruins the whole thing. Just look at how many adverts they cram into a U.S Football game.

You obviously know nothing about Dale Earnhardt. He was all about growing the sport of NASCAR Racing and seeing it become the best. Growing means change and with the change comes new names and new faces. Why does everyone bitch about who the primary sponsor is. Everyone bitched when Nextel took over and now I'm hearing it with Sprint. I can only imagine what it would be like if Massengill had taken over as primary sponsor. Yeah the Massengill Disposable Douche Cup, I like the sound of that.

I am guessing I will be down there four times this summer. I am a photographer, but mostly work in Michigan, norhtern Ohio, and Inidana. Have not been to Eldora in a few years. Hope to get there, and back to Knoxville this summer.
