Marines guarding our southern border for 18 months. It would make for good training and good trigger time. Also, I am going to go out on a limb and speculate jumpers won't be very fond of jarhead tactics and might just stay put.

Everyone searches for a better life, it's not the Mexican's fault that America is so awesome everyone wants in. Perhaps rather than spending so much money on border patrol, America should help bolster Mexico's economy and social welfare, otherwise it's not addressing the root of the problem.

And people complaining about Mexico's companies stopping illegal workers, well every company in the developed and industrialised world faces the same problems, it's not as if the Mexican government is sending its own people into America.
We have thousands of Americans who are losing their jobs due to the lending meltdown. Yes, everyone wants a better life. The topic of discussion here is the government of Mexico. Mexico's failure does not them the right to support illegal activity and permission to ignore our sovereignty. The role of the United States is not to export wealth, especially now. More often than not the result of foreign aide is permanent dependency. For a real change to happen in any country the domestic population must work for it and demand a better system. Everything else is temporary charity.
Mate you live in an ideal world, try living in Mexico all your life and see if you still feel the same, or any other developing country for that matter. You know what, the only reason why some of these countries such as mexico and many south-east asian nations CAN'T become self managed and economically independent is because economic superpowers such as the USA are exploiting their cheap labour and bullying them into economic submission by sheer economic size. Don't patronise everyone and cry foul play by the other countries, you guys are crying foul play to China because the Chinese economy is growing so fast, and hypocrisy is the definitive sign of a country unable to manage the problem but love complaining about it.
I've been to Mexico (not just the tourist areas). I also went to Venezuela in the early 90's and seen the extreme poverty in the barrio districts. I am aware of the difference. However, importing that poverty is not our responsibility. What does China have to do with Mexico supporting illegal immigration? When have I ever cried foul at China? I think purposely devaluing your currency to keep the cost of labor low sucks. But for the most part our economic woes are self inflicted. Accepting unfair trade practices is our problem and no one "owes" us a thing. By having a large economy you think we are bullying Mexico into submission? If it weren't for the trade we do with Mexico they would be in even more dire straits. We trade more with Mexico than we do with China. Labor in Mexico and other developing nations, cheap as it may be, is still work. Often it is more money than they would make otherwise. The bleeding hearts who complain about the south Asian families working for low wages are extremely short sighted. The alternative for legitimate work is drug trafficking and/or selling your children into prostitution.

This may be another topic, but would the United States be better off if every single illegal immigrant disappeared instantly?  While in some cases they are a burden on our society, without them, cheap labor would be hard to come across (en masse) which could theoretically drive the prices of many things up.
true, but the lack of cheap labor would also increase the average salary, and the two would roughly balance out.  and honestly, I'd rather pay an American $1.00 for a head of lettuce than pay an illegal immigrant $.69 for the same head of lettuce (not that I eat much lettuce).  There are poverty stricken people in many of the southern and border states who would fill the gap that the Mexicans would leave, and taking them off the street and putting them in the work force would be good for everybody involved.

And god forbid Mexico has to actually provide something for it's citizens, the Mexican government's level of hypocrisy on nearly every issue is sickening indeed...

Perhaps the solution is rethinking the way we allow people to immigrate here legally. I know personally how challenging it is. People are quick to jump to conclusions that those who oppose illegal immigration are the ones who are against any immigration. When we ignore illegals we are shitting all over the people who have done everything the right way. Immigration built this nation, and immigration is still a very important aspect of this country. But coming here legally and documented should not be too much to ask.

As long as they do it legally and learn to speak the fucking language theyre welcome to come. The people who come here illegally or think they deserve special treatment and should not have to learn english should be brutally tortured.

I love this "the US is bullying Mexicans to work for inferior wages" bit.  You do understand that making $3 an hour is an improvement over what they could get elsewhere, don't you?  If workers were getting totally screwed by American jobs, they wouldn't be quite as eager to take them!

Off topic:  I'm not trying to derail a thread here, but I see a lot of irony in "The people who come here illegally or think they deserve special treatment ..." being above the line "Piracy for Life".  Against the feeling of entitlement, eh?

On topic:  Illegals should be deported the laws regarding the hiring of illegals ought to be strictly enforced.

There, you answered your own question.

OK so you can complain about China controlling its currency to stay internationally competitive, but you seem quite indifferent to families earning $1 per day so you guys can buy your $100 Nike or Adidas shoes? Is that not economic bullying?

Do you really think that for America to enter a poor nation and exploit their cheap labour, it's helping that country's economy? Perhaps you work for the government and are lead to believe that, but America uses its economic supremacy as a weapon. Perhaps you've heard of the Asian currency crisis of 1997, fueled by huge influxes of capital by countries such as America. Or perhaps how America bullied Japan into raising its currency because it was too competitive?

OK, so this is kinda off topic, but don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating illegal immigration, I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy in your arguments.

Selectivly taking part of a quote out of it's context is the surest sign of a weak argument.
Now focus:

Kmarion wrote:

It's called personal responsibility. We set ourselves up for it so we must deal with it and be accountable.

And so it is better to not employ them at all? The factories you are referring to (unsourced) are contracted. The Chinese don't have the benefit my nation had during it's economic boom . China has banned all unions. Do you know what the average income has been in China? It wasn't until China began to manufacture and trade freely that their economy started to grow.

And just so you know.
As a global company, NIKE manufactures products in over 30 countries in approximately 350 factories – none of which NIKE owns. Through these subcontracted factories, NIKE has helped create jobs for nearly 500,000 people worldwide. The challenges for a global company with a productions system as vast as this should not be underestimated. It is difficult. Nevertheless, NIKE is tackling these challenges as hard as we tackle any part of our business.
Educate your argument.

Do you really think that for America to enter a poor nation and exploit their cheap labour, it's helping that country's economy? .
Yes I do. They have been isolationist for centuries. Once they opened their doors and started trading and producing their economy has grown by leaps and bounds. If you want to see the clear evidence look at the years just prior to open trade.

Let's deal more with specifics rather than lofty insinuations of bullying.

The truth is in the numbers. If you don't think the Chinese are gaining tremendously by trading with us you are absolutely blind and incapable of seeing basic trends.

Why the fuck is it our responsibility to bolster their economy and their social welfare? Are you shitting me? Tell you what, why don't you raise a special tax in Australia and us it to buy luxury cars for the Aborigines?

Wow. Insanity rules the day...

China definitely benefits from our trade, but my beef with it is they benefit from it WAY more than we do.  This is slowly becoming a very one-sided arrangement.

But who's fault is that?  China?  No.  MegaCorporations wanting maximum profit?  These corporations don't have to manufacture in China.  China is not forcing these corporations to produce goods in their country.

At first, Mexico was the megacorporations favored country.  When Mexico got more expensive, they moved to China.  Look at IT. India is starting to get expensive.  Now, outsourced tech jobs are finding there way to the former Russian republics.

Not surprising.

As aggravated as I sometimes get at America, I have to be glad that I don't live in the shithole that is Mexico.
