Computer related but this is a D&ST furball waiting to happen so I'm posting it here.
CS and amazingly EverQuest! have been banned in Brazil, but don't worry! there are plenty more violent videogames there that are available to you...

The South American nation famous for its ability to create great soccer players, attractive swimsuit models and land that used to be rainforests has brought the banhammer down upon two of the world's most popular online games. Both Counter-Strike and EverQuest, each now nine-years old, were said to promote "the subversion of public order, were an attack against the democratic state and the law and against public security" by the judge enacting the ban.

According to the AFP report on the matter, the prohibition on selling CS and EQ was actually passed in October of 2007, but was only recently enforced by PROCON, the national consumer protection agency. Good work, Brazil. Glad all of your problems are sorted out now that the video game police are tackling the tough issues!

That law is currently suspended and deprecated as unconstitutional; therefore, it is not being enforced.

That is fucking ridiculous. If they actually enforced that law I would call for ninja assassin teams to kill all government officials and law enforcers.

Yes, I know.  But I thought it was an appropriately related article.

lol, it's true that law was fucking ridiculous but it wasn't exactly as it's written in this article... The thing is, there were these places where people supposedly played pinball and shit, but it was actually gambling (from which the government didn't profit) so they decided to close them down. Of course, along with gambling joints went legit games...

It was very funny for while it lasted because it affected internet cafes as well. So you could - theoretically - go down to a cafe and check your mail, but it was illegal to play games!

btw as far as I know, this law still exists!!!

Wow...  talk about "nanny state."  I'm glad I don't live in Brazil.  CS is pretty fun, even if it's old.

I lost a good friend to Everquest. He started killing rats online and we never saw him again. Last I heard he was living in a dark room feeding off Mtn Dew and cigarettes. Poor bastard.

Hope they banned only selling, because http://www.mibr.com.br/ would have to move or stop playing...
