It's not my fault this is here. Psprpg told me to.

Anyway, I need to record an .mp3 of something that's already on the computer. I have Audacity, but it keeps telling me I have to use a mic. Same with Windows Sound Recorder (Vista).

If no one knows a way to record sound, how about taking the sound out of an .avi and converting it into an .mp3?

Preferably in the next couple hours, as this is for school.

gracias

You changed it from microphone to something else in Audacity?

well, there are bunch of different things to try.

First, just try bringing the audio clip (drag&drop) into audacity, then File>Export As>mp3

OR

if your graphics card is leet enough, it should have a loop-back input. Set audacity to use that, then record/play the sound.

The problem is, it's not an audio clip. It's the sound part of an .avi movie file.

What sound card do you have? What are its input options?

I'm not sure, but Windows Device Manager says it's a "SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC" (caps as in original). I can't seem to find its input options.

Disk Writer in Winamp? Play your video in Winamp, and it will output a WAV file.

Just remember to set it back to DirectSound afterwards

Stock sound card. Came with some generic DELL computer (desktop). I didn't buy it.

Edit: One of you's probably gonna have to walk me through it after it finishes installing; I have zero experience with anything of this sort.

hmm.... yea, i think the sigmatel's are pretty shitty. I've got one on my laptop... my only other idea is to run a cable from the head-phones iut to the stereo line in... just make sure to turn OFF audacity's music play-through....

Any chance Audacity will let you use a "What U Hear" recording option?

If yes, one way ticket to success. If not, grab a headphone cable that is a plug (male) on both ends. Plug one in to the green port, the other in to the blue port. Set Audacity to record with "line in."

Can either of you show me where the Disk Writer thing in WinAmp is?

Edit: Defiance: haven't seen one. I guess I'll try rigging up a cable.

Try this.

http://snesmusic.org/tutorials/wawavedump.html

Then convert the wav to mp3 or however you choose to do it. Then profit.

Walk you through what? Winamp?

Preferences > Plugins > Output

Set to DiskWriter.

Play.

STOP!*

Find the output file in My Music (same name.wav)

* Winamp is set to Repeat by default, and you'll end up with 1GB of wav very quickly.

Or try setting your recording options in Windows to "Stereo Mix."

Diff'rent sound cards call it diff'rent things, its all the same.

Will work however. Downside is you have to listen to it in realtime, Winamp spits it out in seconds.
