Well...my laptop has a windows systems 32 corrupted so it wont start up

I need some help picking a way to recover, the comp offers me 2 ways

theres the Windows recovery thing, but whenever I chose that option it says its going to restart, restarts, and then refuses to boot up.  I would prefer this option, but it just doesnt work.

The other option was the destructive recovery, it basically restores everything to factory defaults and deletes everything
I know I can rely on that...I hope...but if i choose that option itll be at least a week of downloading, installing, and customizing everything all over again, which I definetly dont want to do

So, any suggestions on what I should do?

no, seriously, just go for the second option, i doubt you can get windows back without doing a complete restore.  If that doesnt work, send it to a professional to get it fixed.  My laptop died before xmas; the HDD exploded and every time it booted I just got a screen saying "OS not found".  I was not impressed.

Do you use a HP comp?

Any sort of program that'll rebuild the index/directory (whatever you want to call it) of the hard drive. Something like Checkdisk, except checkdisk probably isn't your best bet.

If you can't get your data back with one of those types of program, things suddenly get a whole load more complicated.

Start fresh, make backups or get an external hard drive.

Learn your lesson, do the destructive restore.

just be happy it did not fuck up the partition. Then you would be screwed.

Why?
then he would have to buy a new OS. 200 pounds out the window or a minimum fee from HP support where he can get recovery CD´s if he has a HP comp.

Yeah, because everyone buys outdated OS's.

More error detail, and some info on hardware would have been nice. Be that as it may, I'll assume your running XP, so try the following:

1/ Start\restart your PC
2/ Keep tapping the F8 Button until a menu appears
3/ When the menu appears use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to select the ‘Last known good configuration’ option.
4/ Once selected press Enter
5/ Your PC should now reinstall the ‘last known good configuration file’
6/ Restart your PC and keep finger crossed

I don't hold much hope for this step but ya gotta try it.

well, if he had not made any recovery cd´s he had to do it. And just because people are not comp experts does not make them idiots. fuck the firms for not giving a free cd with the purchase.

That won't work.

He needs to rebuild the file index and hope any corruption is minor. If that fails a full reinstall will be in order, if the hard drive is not damaged.

If the partition is irreparably damaged, he'll have to create a new one, using either an OS installer disk, recovery tool or 3rd party app on a bootable disk.

Anyway, try mounting the HDD in a second PC and recovering the files from there, I dont know if it will work I dont have many experience in file recovery (only in losing it >.<) but good luck.

not smart when firms dont include an OS disc when you purchase a machine.

Is the site illegal in any countries? I'm sure the van would rather shut down the site before killing off a forum that a user posted a link for.

Thanks for your concern, anyway.

Which is why I suggested 3 alternate options. There are many free tools you can burn to CD that able perfectly capable of creating an NTFS partition. You don't need an OS CD to come with the system to build a new partition.

What is your obsession with HP machines anyway?

HP-I have a HP pavilion and its a freaking major problem doing recovery cd´s for it. Now I found out that I have to download a patch.

Recovery managers are absolute crap. I'm sure there is an absolute plethora of useful LEGAL bootable disk images on torrentspy, though linking to a site with so much illegal content is probably unwise.

Proprietary recovery CDs are for mugs.

what i got from all of those posts is that hp pavilion laptops are a piece of crap..and i own 1..more specifically the hp dv2000 with windows xp
didnt really want to create a recovery cd cause when i got it, it suggested 5 dvds or something, which i thought was a waste

and yes..they didnt include the OS disk

hmm, HP pavilion laptops are GREAT. most firms dont include an OS and the recovery for me only asked for 2 DVD´s. I think it wants 5 CD and perhaps 1 dvd in your case. Read what it says.
