This guide will show you how to become a better and more effective sniper.

Steps

- Choose your weapon system. The most effective rifle for sniping is the M24 for the USMC.

- The damage effectiveness for the sniper rifles in this game varies per weapon. The strongest weapons being the M24 and the M95 sniper weapon systems. Try and use these systems as much as possible.

- Be aware of the way the rifle sounds each rifle has its own distinctive report when fired.

- Test each weapon system and find out which one works best for you.

- Know your scope: Each rifle has a different scope picture. They go from simple(m24) to complex (SVD,type 88).Not all the markings on these scopes are useful for combat in this game.

- DO NOT SHOOT AT EVERYTHING! If you dont hit the target the first shot dont waste the ammo or position. You should be able to tell where the bullet lands by holding down the fire button and the scope will stay zoomed in on the M95 and M24.

- Kill the enemy that has the most threat potential, i.e. tank commander positions, fixed AA,AT,machine gun posts. These are also very easy because the enemy is fixed.

- POSITION POSITION POSITION. If you do not have a good position on your enemy it can cost you your life and can cost your team points and possibly a loss. When moving to a position try and be as inconspicous as possible. The best positions are usually going to be out in the open where the enemy will not expect you. Most of the time though you can only take one or two shots from out in the open before you are found. Another good position is on the corner a building this will give you cover from enemy fire. Here are the pros and cons of some other positions:

- Roof tops while being good for viewing the battle can be detrimental to your ability to snipe. If you must go on a rooftop do not stay long and make sure that if you know you are going to stay for a few shots make sure you stay behind something on the roof and place a CLAYMORE on the top of the ladder so that an enemy soldier that come up the ladder has a nice welcoming present and this will give you time to exit this location.

- Cranes are the worst position you can use in most maps. Counter snipers will pick you off very quickly and it leaves you open to tanks, APC's, FAV's, AAA,small arms fire and a meriod of other devices. If you are forced to use a crane, get up the ladder quickly and take maximum of 3 shots and use the wheels on the crane to mask your position. Also, NEVER use the boom arm (the top of the crane). That is the first place anyone will look for a sniper, and it gives no cover. Use one of the platforms below the boom.

- Hill positions can be very effective especially for long range sniping.Try and use trees, bushes, rocks and other items in the terrain to mask your position.

- Sniping from vehicles can be done from most transport vehicles where your personal weapon is your defense. Most enemies will not expect a sniper in the back of a Hummer, so if you are in a squad and everyone exits stay in the rear and use it.

- Short-range sniping shots are best when standing or kneeling in the game because you will need to quickly take the shot and then move because the enemy will probably hear you and then see your position.

- When you put your reticle of the scope on your target in a short range shot you will want to make sure you take the enemy down with only one bullet. The best way to ensure this is to aim for your enemies forehead or scalp, if you shoot your enemy in either spot you will get a one shot one kill.

- If you cannot get a head shot on your enemy, shoot at whatever part of your enemy is exposed usually one shot from a sniper rifle on the body of most units in the game will cause 3/4 damaged to be assessed to your enemy thus making your second shot very simple and a body shot will assure his demise.

- Short range sniping is very difficult because you will usually be very near the enemy possibly even surrounded make sure you can quickly switch to your pistol and use the claymores to defend your position, grenades can be used to allow you to escape a fire fight.

- Long range sniping: Over 100 metres the game tries to calculate for bullet drop. The game does not do an effective job of doing so but you will need to adjust for a slight bit of drop due to enemy movement.

- Setup for a long range shot usually when you are going to take a long range shot you are prone and have been in a position for a few minutes watching the enemy.
Before taking a long range shot, make sure that you watch your enemy for a few seconds watch his patterns.

- Look for the enemies that are lying down or just standing around try and avoid moving shots they are usually more difficult and you may expose your position.

- If you have to take a long range or short range moving shot you do not really need to lead your enemy much. Place it on them and just slightly ahead but make sure you portion of your sight reticle is on the enemy. Try and avoid shots that are not linear to your position if an enemy is running towards you or away from you on the same line those are the best shots if he is running sideways or off of your linear line try and avoid these shots.

- DO NOT shoot at enemies that are moving erratically, i.e. jumping around running in circles or zig zagging. These are pointless shots and will waste ammo and expose your position.

- Position the reticle for the long range shot on your enemies head right at the scalp. It will seem like you are adjusting for drop but it is really just because the enemy is so much farther away.

- PRACTICE! Sniping takes a lot of RDR (rounds down range). Practicing against bots may be kind of boring and easy but try and turn it into a fun game rather than just sniping them. Bots are good targets and they move erratically and are dependable when you begin sniping.

- Close quarters combat: Your pistol, claymore and grenades are your only CQB weapons. PISTOL: Aim for the head with your pistol otherwise a descent enemy will finish you off very quickly. Claymores: Place them in areas that are highly trafficed by the enemy and use them to protect your rooftop positions. Grenades:Throw grenades to get your enemy to back off your position or give you enough time to get back to your friendlies.

- Do not drive vehicles to your position for sniping and if you have to to get to it quickly try and place the vehicle in the most inconspicous place you can.

Tips

- The best way to learn the distances in the game is to open a multiplayer server and just run around on each map from flag to flag. When you move your scope over the flag point it will tell you your distance.

- Do not overuse a position. Overusing a position will expose you and the enemy will eventually seek you out or the commander will get wise of your position.

- Short range shooting: This type of shot usually takes place from about 20 metres out to about 100 metres.

- Long range shooting: This type of shot will be from 100 metres and beyond.

- Only fire 1 or 2 times then wait and watch to see if the enemy has located you if not repeat 1 or 2 shots then wait again..

- Whenever possible take the easiest shots. Take the kill not the glory of the hard shot.

- It takes 3 body shots from a semi auto sniper rifle in BF2 to kill an enemy.

- Headshots will usually result in an instant kill.

- Snipers are anti-infantry. Don't shoot tanks. Only shoot at helicopter cockpits if you have an M95 and are a crack shot. Be sure to spot(press q and click mouse button) enemy vehicles so they show up on your team's radar.

Warnings

- Snipers dont get a lot of points if you are looking to get a lot of points then play as a medic.

C'mon Ryan, this is getting ridicuous, we have enough Sniper Guides. I thought I was pushing it with a third guide last year, but now we have about ten.

Also, now that we've got the wiki it kind of puts an end for the need for traditional guides. untraditional guides are still fine, like my "how not to die by claymore" and polarbearz' "Essential guide."

Uhm i disagree on this point.  I pick off the gunner in tanks all the time.  By killing the drivers gunner you are vastly improving your squads/teams chances of eliminating the tank with C4/AT mines/AT missile.

As for the mention on helo's...I'm becoming quite the 'crack shot' and i still leave the attack helo's alone for the most part (will pump pistol rounds into the...evey little bit helps take them down).  The b-hawks and the others however, i love to see them bad boys come in and hover near a flag. While laying supressing fire down with people bailing out of them to cap a flag.  I'll pick off a gunner or an engineer who's busy trying to fix that damage my friendlies put on it.

Some interesting info regardless of its source.
I didn't know about the M24 and M95 holding down button thing, that's been something that annoyed me because I wasn't 100% sure whether I'd hit my target or not and bullet drop seems to be a bit odd in BF2. I come from sniping in Operation Flashpoint where bullet physics are incredibly realistic and an absolute blast. (The Dragunov in OFP is incredible)

Most of the stuff i've already learned, quite funilly on gulf of oman I was capturing the flag around the crane and got killed from above.. So I respawn as a sniper to hunt the git down only to discover there are like 5 people at the very top of the crane.

On that day it became sniper hunting day, I swear it was so funny sniping them at range from a bush and seeing them move left and right trying to find me.. good day, I got a good 10 kills from those crane campers.

If I may add to that guide slightly, your purpose as a sniper is not one to amass kills but to tie up enemy resources. If you can get a bunch of them tied up either trying to find you or otherwise engage them from getting flags then you have done your purpose.

While you can get really good sniper spots you will be eventually found out, either through someone you've just killed for the fifth time (and they've finally figured out where you are) or someone getting lucky.

When you think your location has been made (either by whistling bullets or suspicious enemy movements or sounds) bug out and if possible go to a completely different spot on the map. (or if possible find a spot that looks at the old spot you were at, chances are somebody might go there in hopes of knifing you.. in which case you can snipe them from your new spot)

Movement, i've had people walk right by me and never even notice I was there. When people, tanks whatever are near you and you're relatively sure your position hasn't been made do NOT move an inch, unfortunately you can't move just your head (like in OFP) so trust in your camoflage. (I assume you're in a good well hidden position with lots of vegetation)
