Yo guys
I wasn't sure if this was D&ST discussion, I would like some serious replies so I'll post it here

1. Is there a specific angle and speed that a bullet could be shot at that it would do a full rotation around the Earth?

2. How is currency valued? Just why is £1 worth $2. What's stopping a new country from making a currency and saying, 1 blahmark = £500

3. Has there ever been a helicopter V helicopter dogfight in real life? If yes what type and when...

Just some questions a certain member wanted me to post
Any answers, interesting points etc on these questions?

For question 2,

every country must be able to back the money it creates with gold. Thats why hyperinfaltion hits, if a goverment cant afford to back its money it just prints more and more.

Iran-Iraq war had some helicopter fights.

This war saw the only confirmed air-to-air helicopter battles in history with the Iraqi Mi-24s flying and scoring victories against Iranian AH-1J SeaCobras (supplied by the United States before the Iranian revolution) on many separate occasions.[9]

then for question 1

really, NO way. you can even say that without calculating, firing a bullet NEVER gives enough power to travel aaaaall the way around the earth.

1)  There is a certain velocity and angle which would put a buller into orbit, but i cant tell you becuase i have no idea how to firgure them out.  Its a similar principle to that used for putting satellites into orbit.

2) As far as I understand it, it has to do with the country's econimic performance as well as the amount of gold.  A country has to be able to back up the value of its currency on something, often gold.  In a fiat economy, the currency has value simply becuase the government says it does, or due to social convention.  The only reason it has value here is because so many people trade it in exchange for goods or services.  Nothing really stops a country from simply printing money and giving it value, this only causes problems when it gets out of control.
Read this --> http://people.ischool.berkeley.edu/~hal … 01-15.html for more, its pretty interesting.

basically the certain velocity to escape the earthern gravitational pull and leave the atmosphere needs to be so incredibly high that it is highly unlikely you would ever be able to make it come all the way around.

1. Just get it into orbit,..

2.a Money is only a representation of wealth not wealth itself. E.g. you can't keep printing money without earning it, that's what Germany did in the interbellum and it just resulted in hyper-inflation since there was more money for the same ammount of wealth. Appart from "overprinting", with the common abandonment of the golden standard, other social-economic aspects can affect the value of money as well, like the unveiling of an economic bubble.

2.b Common sense is stopping new countries: they can make a new currency if they want to. E.g. the Euro or the removal of six zero's from the Turkish Lira (a cup of coffee now costs only a dozen Turkish Lira instead of a few million). Of course making a new currency in no way effects the real "wealth" mentioned in 2.a.

3. US Comanche and Russian HOKUM are developped as air-superiority fighters which suggests their is use for them.*

make that not comanche, it was developed to be useless whilst UAV's took over it's job.

1. It is circular motion (physics).  I believe the formula is a=v^2/r, where "a" is the acceleration due to gravity and r is the radius from the center of the earth...it should come out to 7,901m/s (or roughly 28,400km/hr) at sea level when fired horizontally.

The RAH-66 Comanche was supposed to be a scout/anti-armor and personnel helicopter.
You can put a sidewinder on some AH-1 Cobras...(not sure which versions).

For Number 1.

No.  Not with any bullet or any firearm or cannon made today.  I mean REALLY NO.

An 8 inch artillery round can be shot 20 miles, and it can only reach an altitude of about 35,000 feet.  That is the altitude airliners fly at.  Out of a rifle or pistol?  no chance at all.  a .50 cal  can go maybe 12,000 feet, max.

1. Is there a specific angle and speed that a bullet could be shot at that it would do a full rotation around the Earth?

yes. exactly parallel to the surface at your location, but the velocity would have to be hundreds of times the speed of sound to overcome gravity (and air resistance, which has been assumed to be zero in most physics calculations)

2. How is currency valued? Just why is £1 worth $2. What's stopping a new country from making a currency and saying, 1 blahmark = £500

They can say 1 whatever = $100,000, but that means that they would have to keep an extremely small amount of currency in circulation, or inflation would rapidly level out the value of the currency to a more practical level (one US dollar is worth thoudands of Zimbabwean Dollars right now)

3. Has there ever been a helicopter V helicopter dogfight in real life? If yes what type and when...

no, most nations attack helicopters are designed to attack ground targets, and only in a situation where one side has near complete air superiority.  Modern attack helicopters have the capbility to engage other aircraft, but these craft are only operated by a few nations, who are currently on speaking terms.

Awesome. I read that whole wiki and I'm dying to play some Special Forces to fly the Hind on Mass Destruction and Surge. I wonder what variant the BF2 version is out of ALL of those listed in that wiki......

1. No, wind resistance would bring the bullet to ground before it got anywhere near orbit.

2. Currency is related to the productivity of your nation and the healthiness of your economy.

3. Probably.

Canadian and US governments Project_HARP

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_HARP
A Canadian-born astro-physicist, Bull had earlier research contracts with with the United States Army, the Canadian Department of Defense and McGill University. While working on the Canadian Velvet Glove missile project, he realized that scientific instruments could also be fired from a gun and survive if put in a proper casing. In 1962 Bull obtained US military support for the joint U.S./Canadian High Altitude Research Program [HARP]. Initially working from a facility on the island of Barbados, a small 5-inch gun was used to fire projectiles to an altitude of over 70 km, and a 7-inch guns fired projectiles to nearly 100 km. Subsequently, in Arizona a larger HARP gun was fabricated by welding together a pair of 16-inch battleship guns, forming a barrel some 30 meters long. The gun was used to fire light-weight sub-caliber discarding-sabot projectiles called Martletts. On 19 November 1966 the gun fired a 185-lb Martlet to an altitude of 180 km. The 16 inch HARP gun was intended to launch a small three stage rocket carrying a 10 kg payload into space. However, the Canadian and US governments terminated HARP funding in 1967.
