My ISP sent me an email after I downloaded Age of Empires III.  Something along the lines of, "Microsoft knows about this, and it's up to them to press charges."  Luckily they didn't, cause that game blew.
Do you use optimum online? If so, you got the same letter as me.
Yep.

What about stuff like Frostwire?

Rapidshare is pretty safe, frostwire is like putting a huge red ballon over your house with "I download CP and music" written all over it

only? I have close to 2.5TB of downloaded stuff back at my place
Ok, cheers
yeah, there's no way you're going to get busted for rapidsharing. you download directly from RS servers. There aren't many ways it can go wrong: either somebody finds the links and complains about it to RS (who are then obligated to delete the upload) or you download so much your ISP starts looking at it themselves

I download tv shows from time to time... mainly BBC documentaries.  I've never received a request for removal or even that they think I did something.  I live in Canada though and we pay a tax that is to compensate musicians and movie/tv studios.  They are even thinking about adding a small charge (like $2) to your monthly internet bill that will allow you to download whatever you want... essentially making file sharing legal in Canada.

I love my country.

Last week I PURCHASED the first season of Stargate Atlantis. I watched it, thought it was worth my time to watch the rest of what was available. I then went on ebay and purchased the 2nd and 3rd season(basically all that is out right now for purchase). I figured, "Fuck, I might as well get fully caught up to speed and get the episodes that were recently aired - SINCE I JUST PAID FOR ALL THIS OTHER SHIT!!!!!".

So I head over to my brothers house and download the stuff that has recently aired.

10 hours later my brother gets an email from his ISP saying that they've been contacted by MGM about possible illegal downloads, and that he has to delete all files and send them an email back stating what he has done to remedy the situation, or they're shutting down his fucking internet!! The email also eludes to the possibility that MGM may take court action against this offense.

So I'm assuming that MGM is setting up PCs with torrent programs/files to attain IP addresses, after which they contact the ISP and threaten a lawsuit.

Anyone else run into this shit yet?

Oh, and those that want to flame me for using torrents, I bought whatever was physically available, so STFU.
You knowingly committed a crime, then get upset because your brother might be charged as an accessory ?

Lulz, just lulz.

I'm going to go down to the Pontiac dealer and steal a new GTO - After all I bought a Bonneville, a Grand Am and a Grand Prix ALREADY !
Your analogy fails. These were publicly viewed tv episodes. Tell me the place I can go to were they hand out new cars for free on one particular day.

If they sell them as a set, do you honestly think they are going to be okay with you stealing them?

You can record TV shows, you can record a whole season for free. If thats not stealing then why should downloading be any different.

The difference is pretty basic.  The media companies own the material, and therefore have the right to control the distribution of that material.

Yes, you can record TV shows with VCR, DVR, or whatever, as that is ruled (in the US at least) as Fair Use.  In the Betamax case, it was ruled that copying a complete television show for time-shifting purposes is fair use.  Copied TV shows distributed over BitTorrent really haven't been ruled on, but I doubt that such a copy would pass as fair use, since you did not copy it for your own personal use.  Instead you went and found one that was distributed, and probably engaged in distribution yourself (sharing as you download, for example).
