Do I need a soundcard (non-internal) to get the mic to work in BF2?

I've tried 4 different mics, and none of them work in BF2, but do work in CoD4, CSS, Vent, Xfire, TS, etc (AKA everything else)

I've searched (here and Google) tons of times, but no one seems to have an answer.

So.
Is it possible that I need a new soundcard for the mic to work?
..and if so, does anyone know of any good soundcards with MIDI support?

No, your soundcard has nothing to do with it.

Think about it. All these other games work, I assume every other feature of your sound card works, and the only thing that you change is BF2 and suddenly something is wrong.

Go through all the BF2 settings, the problem is somewhere in there. Perhaps mic sensitivity, or it just needs to be re-enabled.

Read my post as well - I had similar problems and I believe the error is related to the on-board sound of your motherboard. What motherboard r u using?

I couldn't get my microphone working just like u descripe. It worked fine in all my other programs, skype etc. I thought it was due to vista so I tried to install XP instead. Still nothing. I updated all the drivers for my P5B deluxe onboard sound, but it didn't work. I tried all combinations of ingame settings. Still nothing.

Finally I found an old soundblaster live soundcard from my old machine and put in my new machine. At first - still nothing, until I changed the ingame settings from "software" to "hardware". That worked!

So yes - if u are using an ASUS P5B deluxe with that crappy soundmax program - yes, I believe the error is located somewhere in your onboard sound.

Btw I also experienced bad sound without that soundblaster live. Now everything sounds perfect - my soundblaster card is nearly ten f...... years old, but still going strong :-)

I'm not sure of the exact name of my motherboard, but it's from Phoenix.

I think my settings are on "software". I'll try Hardware out.

Edit: Well now I'm hearing my voice echo back when I test the mic, but it still doesn't seem to work in-game.
Is something supposed appear on the grey bar during the mic test?

Do u remember to press the "B" key in order to speak? "V" if being commander. And yes - the grey bar should show green outputs showing your voice. Try enabling the microphone boost and move the speaker bar to the top.

If u hear your own echo the microphone IS working. Just some setting that needs to be set properly.

..Now I don't hear it anymore.

I do have mic boost on in the sound settings, but Mic Gain in BF2 is greyed out.
