How much difference does it make in getting an 8800GT with 256mb of memory versus getting the 512mb one? The highest resolutions I will probably ever be playing are 1280x1024 or 1280x768. The 256mb one is about $50 cheaper.

depends is it gddr3 or gddr2. GDDR3 256 is better than GDDR2 512. According to what i just learned.
Get the 512, some newer games don't allow high quality textures if you don't have 512MB on the card.
512... only a little more and there are nextgen games on the horizon... BF3....

What about the bit speeds? If it's something like 512mb 512bit it's worth it.

The 512 is not that much more expensive. But in honesty, high memory video cards only make a difference on high resolutions, as in 1600+

if the 8800gt has pixel/ pipelines at least 16 or better... go get the card. check newegg.com

Not with the amount of memory some of these high quality textures in modern games use. VRAM becomes a big issue running very high textures on Crysis. High quality shaders and soft shadows all eat into VRAM space and are all becoming more prevalent in modern games.CrazeD wrote:

I have yet to have any problems playing on max settings in any games I play with 256MB. I haven't played Crysis, but perhaps Crysis is just an exception?
I can play COD4 and MOH:A on all high @ 1280x1024 with around 50FPS.

It's not hard to do a few renders in various graphics programs with a variety of effects turned on. You can then try varying buffer sizes etc. and see what that does to your VRAM usage. You'd be surprised by the impact things other than resolution (which is the most obvious and has the biggest impact) have when you add them all together and start turning on complex stuff.CrazeD wrote:
