i just thought id post up here what ive been working on over the last 2 days. after watching a few old sonic x episodes i decided to try and build Tails' jet, the X-Tornado. i used a CAD engineering program, so it wasnt drawn like photoshop, its built piece by piece. Im no expert at the program, only learning it at university btw.

I guess theres no real point to this thread, i just wanted to share what ive been doing for the last few days. beware, there high quality images a >1Mb each. theres some finer detail inside the cockpit (joysticks, HUD etc) you might be able to see from these views

For little experience thats pretty good. Did you use AutoCAD? I had in interest in doing stuff like this a few years ago, now it seems like it is way too much effort.

Do you plan to go into a career with this?

its a program called solid edge, a rather basic one in comparison to others.

and yeah my uni course is aerospace engineering, so although i wont be modelling cartoon jets , this sorta stuff will hopefully be a part my career

Looks good.

The shadows could use some fixing though.

care to elaborate? Optimus Prime is NOT fail...

to the op, nice work. Good luck with the aerospace job. are you going to be designing or something like that?

CAD is a method of work and not a program.

AutoCAD fails for 3D work, although I know the newer versions are much improved. Ive just got a copy of 2007 ready for some Uni work.

I use a program called StruCAD at work, complete 3D modelling...although not quite for making Tornadoes!

I did this for a Boeing side company that makes tools to make the F35. Cad that is, they used some sort of Sun systems program, I think it was an operating system as well because it certainly wasn't Windows. My uncle works there and said he could get me a job at British Aerospace but I couldn't do that all my life. It's fun to experiment with but way too repetitive.

i might put the finer detail on later, but here it is anyway

im making an X-wing now, should be done in a few days

Also im curious to know for the 3d graphics users around here, how long do you expect it would take to make something similar like the M82? ive always though CAD is far quicker for making 3D models, but i havent got any experience with 3d programs to make a comparison
