Controller or mouse?

For flying Jets would it be better to use a Playstation style controler or just stick with the mouse?

Seems kinda hard keeping the jet stable with the mouse and keyboard.
Is the Controller going to let me only use it for jet only or would I have to use it for the Helicoptor also?

I never hooled up a controller to my computer before so I don't know how much of a hassle it would be?

Are you talking about those USB controllers you see at Walmart? I've wanted to try one but wasn't sure if I should waste my money on one.

I recently switched from all keyboard to mouse & keyboard to joystick. My experience is that all kbd was best for dogfighting but I could not shoot ground targets accurately, i could not dogfight at all with kbd & mouse but I could bomb & shoot ground targets decently, and joystick allows me to dogfight & bomb and shoot ground targets. So joystick (Logitech extreme 3d pro) is easily the best for me.

I fly with keyboard and a joystick.

Joystick controls the pivots w/e it is, and A and D allow me to sort of, turn differently.

You can do everything, basically.

Yeah Joystick sounds cool, but I'm not into computer games enough to spend money just to fly a Jet in BF2.
I got a free controller with my 7900GS card, so I was wondering if I should use that if it would work good or just stay wit the mouse and keyboard as I mentioned in my first post.

Unless someone wants to send me there joystick for Christmas

You wont know until you hook it up and try it out. As far as your question as to weather you have to use the controller for the helicopter also? No, you should be able to just set the controller down and use the keyboard and mouse for you chopper time. For the most part a controller shouldn't be any more of a hassle than the joystick other than some of the joystick default controls are already set to what you would want. Even after you hook up a controller or joystick you will still be able to use the keyboard and mouse whenever you want.

Try keyboard only, set it up for wasd+cursor keys, theoretically the same sort of control as the 2 analogue sticks on a PlayStation controller.

A Joypad is better than joystick for planes, but only if it has analogue as well as digital controls and a throttle too. A stick takes too long to throw that big lump of plastic around.

Helicopters, best way to pilot is mouse and keys, but make a small change in the settings on your proile controls switching A and D key to roll, and putting what was assigned to those keys (yaw) onto the mouse axis, then you'll be aiming your chopper cross hairs the same way as a rifle.
