I have The netgear WPN824 router and I have never had any disconnections with the wireless on it. Had it just over than a year at the moment and everything is fine. I would highly recommend it.

The network card I use works fine with vista and is the WG311 pci card.
Thanks for that Teek. I'm going to get 20m of network cable and see then. If I still lag then I'll get a better router. The one I have came with the broadband so its a heap of junk .

If you get a new router and the problem persists, it's probably your modem... I've just had my second fail

Agreed!!

for home use go with Linksys WRT54G model or something close.  I have had zero problems with them, and I have used alot!!!

If changing routers doesn't help you  then your modem is the problem

when you said your computer lost connection for like a week what did you do.....

did you check your IP address?
did you make sure your IP was from your DHCP? and not a 169.x.x.x address
did you try and ping any web sites?
did you try and ipconfig /release and renew your IP?
did you try and ipconfig /flushdns cashe?
did you try a new cable?
did you try a static IP & DNS?
did you try and isolate the problem instead of pointing your finger at the router?

you may want to run some trouble shooting steps first before you jump into a new router so soon.

Make sure you wait before getting a 802.11N router...this is still not an official protocol yet btw...plus its to much money for little pick up in bandwidth Super G work almost as good.

I had the same problem here.. But as the problem happend I switched my wire from the router to the modem and I was on internet again.. I also called my ISP one time about it and they said that they couldn't see any problems and that I was still connected to internet.

Well, you should try that too Jenspm, connect directly to your modem and see if that works.   And what ISP do you have? Telenor, Tele2, Nextgentel or another one.?

Why not? Whats wrong with D-Link? They have good routers, that also scores good on tests.

congrats, but no one cares what you have. he more than likely does not have a card that will support anything above g, so why waste money on something that he can't use. instead lets try and maximize the value of the equipment he does have.

I have a D-Link DGL-4300 router has been running strong for 3 year unlike my deceased Linksys routers.

I recommend the DGL-4300 or the newer DGL-4500 router from DLink

After talking to duk0r and Phaxe, I have decided to do something like this:

https://img510.imageshack.us/img510/9239/housenetworkca6.png

The routers are D-Link DIR-615's
Black Box = PC
Grey Box = XBox 360
Dotted line = wireless connection
Solid line = wired connection

The router in the basement will work as an access point, and the Xbox will be connected via wire, meaning I won't need to use "g" internet.
I will then have both "n" and "g" internet in the whole house.

Also, a PCIe network card for 802.11n costs the same as the router, so I was thinking about just buying a router for my PC instead, letting me use Vista (Vista hates wireless apparently). Also, I would guess a router is stronger than a PCIe card? Will having 3 routers affect my internet in a negative way?

No, but it would be a lot of routers to config (if there isn't a backup system so you can just move and do the same to all..

I'm also got a message about mine. So I will get it tomorrow

ok...

And is having a personal router better than using a PCI card?

no, to recieve wireless.

If it is better to have a router as an AP beside my PC, I might as well do that as it isn't any more expensive.

Wireless = fail, tbh.

Get a DSL, cable to wall, cable from wall to router. Uses the power cables to send info. Much quicker + easier..

Even you want to have Ethernet up stairs I would consider a power over Ethernet adapter.

Just got my router today and I have to say that i'm very happy with it so far!
Router setup was very easy and simple.. Set up your router where you want it to be, lunch the disc on your computer, follow the stuff that is there (Connect your pc to the router, connect to the internet, check internet connection. Then you will have the wireless setup stuff.. And you are finished )

I also connected to it with my old USB wireless and I got 80-90% signal strength and 54 mbps connection straight away.
Haven't managed to get the USB wireless I got with my router to work on that computer yet, but I think its to old to even managed it.. lol..

Will try it later

I've tried d-link and jensen routers (expensive onces), got rid of both, stuck with linksys now, works great. Just a bit of a pain in the ass to configure, but at least the configuration doesnt reset if you pull the plug out like my jensen did.

Don't buy into that. Linksys can be terrible junk, and just because Cisco apparently feels the need to whore their logo on Linksys equipment does not make it good. Cisco is a good enterprise equipment manufacturer. That expertise doesn't directly translate to residential gateways. There's no guarantee that this expertise is even applied at all. It's just a Cisco logo on the box, and nothing more.

Like any manufacturer, they have their good models and their bad models. The latest revision WRTs seem to be pretty decent.

As for myself, I'm sitting on a Cisco 851, 851W is the wireless model. It's probably way overkill for your needs, though. I'd probably recommend a recent revision Linksys WRT54G.

My cousin (w1lhelm) had that, and wasn't happy with it at all. Also, we have 2 different power circuits, or w/e you want to call it, at home, so that isn't going to work well.

I've used the Linksys, D-Link, and Netgear routers.  As for range and reliability I'd say they were all about the same.  However, from the standpoint of configuration I find the Linksys menu system to be the best, at least IMO.
