i went through 3 hours of searches on the internet and haven't found a solution. Hoping someone knows what's going on.

Symptom: After installing bf2, I would double click the shortcut on the desktop, the splash screen would show up in windows, but then the computer locks up. It does not go into "dos" with the blank/black screen where most people complain of. My computer just plains lock up.

What I tried:
reinstall
manual uninstall then reinstall
multiple cd-roms
updated ALL drivers, .net, directx
updated xp
updated punkbuster
updated bf2 patch

Computer specs:
intel core 2 duo 1.8ghz
2gbram
ati radeon x300 (used ati drivers and omega drivers)
intel built on sound card

The searches i came across always talked about opening bf2, then it'll go into dos, then it exits back to windows. My error doesn't even do that. It just locks up the computer and i'll have to do a hard reboot after I double click the shortcut. Also, I would put in the cd and select "play bf2" and it'll also lock up.

HELP!

Could it be a corrupted hard drive or perhaps faulty memory?  My knowledge is limited in this area, but those would be my first guesses.

Has this just begun happening, or has it been a recurring problem?  If it has just recently started acting up, have you changed any hardware of any sort recently?

I just pieced together this computer, but i had bf2 running on my old system.

the parts that i am reusing is just the harddrive, so i know the harddrive works since bf2 was running off this harddrive on the old computer. I guess I will try to replace the ram with another computer i have and see if that fixes the prob.

Does anyone have any software related solutions too before i start opening apart this case.

Sounds like corrupted data files. Most likely because your CD is ruined in some way. Checked it for scratches? Uninstall - borrow a CD from a friend, next reinstalling once again, but type in your own cd-key from the manual. See if this works.

What about CTRL+ALT+DEL? Is the program "not responding", "running" or what? Are u able to shut down the program from the job list?

i'll try a new cd.

as for the alt-ctr-del, the computer completely freezes, so the mouse and keyboard doesn't respond. When i press the num-lock key, it doesn't turn off the light on the keyboard, nor does the caps lock key. So i have to do a hard reboot by holding down the computer switch.

Could be the power supply. I think that's why my BF2 was freezing. I replaced it, but with a crappy one, so it was working initially but the problem quickly arised again. I'll need to spend abit more next time and get a quality one.

ok....finally found what the problem was....i have a new intel board that only has one ide cable connector, but i have 2 cd roms and 1 ide harddrive, so i installed a pci-ide expansion card and hooked up my cd roms to that and had the motherboard ide connector to the harddrive,

apparently, the cd roms work in windows to just access and read data off of it, but when i tried to burn or play bf2, the system locks up. I guess it's some sort of communication error between the cd-rom -> pci ide expansion card -> motherboard/harddrive

so solution:
remove the pci-ide card and attack the harddrive and one cd rom to the same ide cable, then connect the ide cable to the motherboard

i know it's not recommended to put the harddrive and cdrom on the same ide cable, which was why i had the expansion card, but i only have one ide connector on the motherboard and i don't wanna spend money to buy a sata harddrive when this one works perfectly fine.

so, problem solved! Thanks for everyone's help along the way
