Why is it it takes Religion to make good people do evil things? Would the world be better off without any form of it as it causes such extremists that ignore basic humanity and commit hideous crimes aginest other people, the war in Iraq and the "terrorists" are a clear example of what a destructive attitude Religion can cause, Discuss...

Well if ya think about it religion dictates what is good and what is evil so it in itself creates evil and beliefs that lead to extremists

Assuming for a moment that God did exist, then having people treat each other with dignity, compassion, and respect just because they are a human being would be closer to God's message than any religion past or present.

So my answer is absolutely.  I can't even begin to fathom how much further along we would be scientifically and culturaly if religion had not led the bulk of this planets people around like sheep, fearing the wrath of some parent figure deity.

People would find new ways ways to justify killing each other without religion.  Nazi Germany and Communist Russia were both Atheist Organizations yet they both managed to massacre large amounts of people.

Such as that may be, wars and death under the guise of religion have accounted for more death and destruction than all other reasons combined.  While having no religion wouldn't stop it all, it would go a long way to reducing the bulk of it.

I truly believe there are many ways to justify slaughtering millions for the greater good of securing the continued existence of the human species and the environment which it is a part of. Religion is not one of them.

Organized religion is terrible and should be done away with.  It's way too easy for corruption and exploitation to spread within them, and they get extremely dangerous when politics mix with them.  I.e., the Islamic rage at the moment, Priests and reverends telling their "flock" how to vote and showing political swing videos, using peoples' faith as a control instrument.

Forcing morality, guilt, and shame on their followers all the while taking money from their pockets.  More harm than good has been created or urged on by organized religion, and more and more people are being told what to believe in and what to think, causing them to not be able to (critically nor practically) think for themselves.

People should be allowed to believe in anything they want to believe as in a Freethought society, as long as they do not force it upon others.  RAmen.

Where as religion has it's purpose like the "constitution" it's been corrupted and whaped by man. But not only that there is alot of rules in the Bible as well as most other reliogous books that comman sense dictate are wrong.

Funnyily enough we talked about this in RE the other day, my opinion is that religion casue evil becuase it is nothing more than a method of control, it's grown out of the ancient world and societies didn't have laws etc but instead had religion as a governing power. This was all welkl and good way back when but in the modern world it is corrupt and pointless

The same could be said of the government. Humans in general would do the same thing, because mankind by nature is greedy and self-serving.

I think Religion is actually used too often to justify the actions of people who are just scumbags to begin with.

And Polticians sway people with fear tactics and propoganda worse than any precher ever could.

"Vote for him and you lose your right to choose... slavery will come back... they'll legalize gay marriage.... they'll outlaw religion...etc...."

People who want power use fear tactics to try and sway the masses who listen to them, wether it be a pulpit, dais, or altar.

Religion isn't the problem, mankind is. Period, always will be. As long as there are humnas, there will be problems.

While I agree that politics is corrupt, we have the ability to change who is there every few years, and if needed, can remove them from their office.  The same cannot be said about religion.  Also, I think that there is some assumption that there is some level of corruption in government, but it is much harder to persude religious people of that same corruption within their faith.

Very True.

I AM NOT VOTING HERE

This is an extremely dangerous poll to place. Why?

If you say 'yes', then where will people get their system of morals from? What will they believe in? Science? I don't think so.

If you say 'no'... Do I need to explain?

Well, I think too much thought is being put into this. I'll try to simplify.
Religion can be evil and many cases it is. I am a Christian yet I will not have anything to do with religion.
Religion forces issues that an individual may not agree with or they interprate writings differently.
This is why I get upset when people refer to christians as bad. Usually it's a religion that causes wars or other crap. I'ts not the individual christian.
Being human is why we have wars, rape, and other bad stuff. Ones faith can influance the level of morality but any time you get a group of people, someones opinion can influance others level of morality along with their faith and people wind up making bad decisions on a group level.
That is what religions are made of.
So, using this same theory... any situation where there are groups of people, there can be corruption and just plain evil. Example: All governments in the world.
Take the US as an example. (I'm from there so I can speek of it)
We have the Dems and Reps. Both consist of groups of people who individualy truly want the best for our country. But, have you noticed that each party has several levels of morality? Everyone voices their opinion and that will influance others in various ways. Most decisions made in the government are based on "popular beliefs" not always the best decision is made.
So, my point is... religion and politics are very much the same when it comes to making moral decisions.

Ok, maby that did'nt simplify it. Kinda a long explenation instead. Sorry!

The desire for power is the root of all evil.  Religion just makes it easier.  It is a lot easier for some power-hungry dumbass to get people to follow him if he is a religious leader.

Wow....been protesting outside any military funerals lately?

Seriously, that is the best example of this thread...EVER.

Bastards, all of them.

I'd repeat: Extremism should be eradicated.  if it takes shutting down the major religions to do it? let me fire the first shots.  I'd consider it an honor.

In my opinion, it is disgusting to protest at a soldier's funeral for any reason.
