Im proud of my country - history inclusive. if you go far back enough ill wager that ALL countries in the world have some sort of dirty, evil secrets. If Australia's only problem is that the british wanted us to be a prison, so be it.

War isn't about dying for your country, it's about making some other poor son of a bitch die for his.

I got no qualms with the Aussies - hell, I think Kangaroos have gotta be the COOLEST fucking animals around - seriously - I know they're not big enough but shit, I'd LOVE to ride one - that would probably be a regrettable experience though.

Although, I think I'd rather have a country started by criminals who know how to have a good time than live in a country started by a bunch of buckle-wearing bible thumpers - but the US is greta to live in just the same

I think you shoould ask, given that you are from USA, how do U feel being decended from a bunch of land raping  english and french pioneers who murdered the indigenous peoples, stole their land and wealth and called 'your' country the 'land of the free'

..correct me if IM wrong
yeah, and you can probably say worse than that if you tried, but taking land, screwing over others and bossing people around is a tradition that (most) Americans still carry on proudly to this day!

Not to mention that the colonists that started a revolution could be considered criminals.  Our history books call them patriots, but at the time they were criminals under English law.  I also doubt that many of those sent to "Oz" got a fair trial, nor did they commit crimes worthy of such a punishment.

Not to mention we have some of the most corrupt politicians and corporations in the world.

Go figure.

What sports matter, Aussie Rules, cricket, rugby and football (soccer)? Just curious more than anything, you guys are decent at basketball I suppose too, produced Bogut and all, and the Socceroos did qualify for Germany, but other than that you have a sport named after you and another where you pretty much just compete against the rest of your former empire.

our history is fine - just not all that interesting. Most of Europe has seen times back in the Dark Age, and have castles and older buildings around. Its really interesting!
We have abbos, federation, immigration and thats about it. Not saying that theres anything wrong with that - but other places are more interesting in terms of history.
I'd love to have an ancient castle in Australia - thatd be kick-ass!

LOL the red kangroo is big enough to ride... but as you said itd be regreatble because its probbly stand on its tail and kick you across the floor. Red kangaroos are one of the largest species of marsupial. The Red Kangaroo is approximately 5 feet long and has a tail that is about 42 inches long. This tail is used as a balance mechanism. Red Kangaroos can't walk and are limited to hopping as a means of locomotion. However, they are able to jump 29 feet in distance and 6 feet in height. For short periods they can attain a speed of 35 mph. They can maintain a speed of 12 mph for hours.

As for what i think of Australia being started as a prison... well it doesnt bother me. A very small percent of people living here are decendants of crimnals, And those crimianls were sent here for mostly trivial reason, such as brawling and pety thieft. Australia has had periods of great imigration esspecially during the "gold rush" and after each major war. So saying Australia is full of criminals or decendants of crimianls is well wrong and who cares anyway.

^ I ate kangaroo when I went over to Oz a few years ago, bloody nice stuff!  Go the great khan gold coast highway _b

Australians may be descended from criminals and underarm bowlers, and they may now be the USA's bitches but lets face it, back in the 1800s there were two choices:

1)Don't steal to feed yourself, and slave away in a dingy factory somewhere in England for 16 hours a day, 7 days a week and have nothing to show for it save the shit you were forced to buy from the factory shop just to keep your job
2)Be reasonably well-fed, and once you're FINALLY caught, slave away in the sun on a farm somewhere in Australia for 16 hours a day, 7 days a week and eventually have maybe a house or some land for your efforts.

Go figure.

Australia's prison population has increased during the past year, with the Northern Territory recording the highest imprisonment rates in the country.

On average, 24,226 people were in prison per day in the three months to October, up from 23,490 in the same quarter last year.

The national average daily imprisonment rate is 155 prisoners per 100,000 adults.

Aborigines continue to make up a disproportionately high percentage of the prison population - and the rate is growing.

The national rate of imprisonment for indigenous people has increased seven per cent in the past year, to 2,027 prisoners per 100,000 indigenous adults.

That's 13 times higher than the rate for non-indigenous Australians.

The Northern Territory still has by far the highest rates of imprisonment in the country, at 550 prisoners per 100,000 adults, followed by Western Australia (223) and Queensland (177).

The Northern Territory and Tasmania recorded the largest increases in imprisonment rates over the past year, each up eight per cent.

The ACT has the lowest imprisonment rate at 76 prisoners per 100,000 adults, and recorded a decrease of four per cent in the 12 months to the September quarter.

Victoria and Queensland also recorded a drop in their imprisonment rates.

Victoria has the second-lowest rate of adults in prison, at 94 per 100,000 people, while South Australia's rate is 128 per 100,000 adults, Tasmania's is 144, and NSW's is 170.

Of those in full-time custody, 79 per cent have been sentenced, while 21 per cent are still awaiting the outcome of a trial.

The ACT and South Australia have the highest rate of unsentenced prisoners, at 34 per cent each.

NSW and WA have the highest rates of imprisonment for indigenous adults, coming in at 3,421 and 2,176 per 100,000 indigenous adults, respectively.

Men still significantly out-number women in prison populations, accounting for 93 per cent of those in full-time custody.

Nationally, 1,624 women were in custody in the September quarter, up from 1,589 on the same time last year.

Over one-third of them are incarcerated in NSW, which has 597 women in custody.

There's also been an increase in the number of Australians under non-custodial orders, up seven per cent in the past year to 54,906 in the September quarter.

That figure includes people who've received fines, community service orders, parole, bail, probation or some restriction to movement.
