As I said before, I already had AVG but it mysteriously stopped working, even after I tried reinstalling it.  I'm looking for suggestions of free virus protection software BESIDES AVG.  Avast seems to be out front at this point, I'll check it out.  Thanks to those of you who read my original post.

as i said avast-good protection, takes little resources and updating while playing bf2 doesnt lower the performance. ohh and free and good interface, all sords of protections (i only use the standard shield which is totally enough).

Did you uninstall it completely including any registry entries (if any) and delete the folder from Program Files ?
