Does anyone know how to erase parts of an image that are outside the canvas?

I was planning on Ctrl+selecting the background, then inversing the selection, selecting the image in question, and hitting delete, but when I do that, it tells me no pixels were selected.

I guess I could Ctrl select the background, then increase the height of the canvas and inverse/delete the selection....
..But I'm hoping for an easier/faster way.

Actually:
Image, Trim, Transparent Pixels should work fine as well...
It's what I always used.
