First of all: where the heck did the PR forum go ? was it lost or just not set up again?

Nevermind.

Well during the time bf2s has been down I've been doing som stuff for the PR community that will be in the game in a later patch at some point when we finish the stuff.
I know its not exactly "graphics" but I rendered them to look a bit shiny so they could qualify for some kind of graphics

This first model is for the IDF (Isreali Defence Force). Its the Negev (Commando version). It will server as the LMG and a assault rifle version for spec ops. (the rest of the IDF will use AR-15 variants and TAR's).

https://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z232/Z-trooper/Modelling/negevshine02.png

This one is still a major work in progress (the sight is WAY out of proportion and still being worked). Its the RPG-29. It will server as the H-AT for Russia and Hamas when its done.

https://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z232/Z-trooper/Modelling/rpg29shine02.png

The models need textures - of cause so dont mind that

I have done other work, too. Here I have compiled almost all of my handheld weapons into one render (though I'm missing a few of my latest).

Very nice, how long did it take you to do one, on average? Also, what program did you use? Maybe you could give me some tips so I could get started

hey man, good to see you again.

actually some of it didnt take that long because I have quite some experince now. I'm getting more and more addicted as I play around with it. All the time I used to spend in photoshop, I'm now spending on modeling. I still use Photoshop to make the textures and such

I used 3D Studio Max 9. And I've only been modeling for like 4 months. The negev was actually my 4th ever model.

This was my first:

https://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z232/Z-trooper/Modelling/shinebullets3.png

If you want to get started I could find a bunch of links for you. And I'm currently working on a video tutorial to show people faster and more motivating ways of creating a weapon model. 3/4 videos have been uploaded.

Here is the thread, but keep in mind that its still a work in progress.

https://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z232/Z-trooper/Modelling/ak5video.png

feel free to ask if you need anything. I'll try to gather some links for you if you are interested.

Awesome, I'll have to watch that video. Is this program free?
If not, I'll find a way to get it. Once I do, I'll mess around a bit and then get you to help me around on Xfire.

sounds like a plan. its not free, but you could just download the 30 day trial and "activate" it if its something you like
Gmax is a free watered down version of it. I havent tried it myself, but I hear you are able to do some of these basic things there too. I believe it was made by the same guys that made 3ds max.

you are welcome to contact me, but I'm moving to my apartment this weekend and I dont know when I'll have my internet up. So I might only be online on the forum when I'm at the university - where I cant log on xfire because of the proxy. So your best bet will be by PM or MSN.

EDIT:

If you follow the tutorial this should be the result you end up with:
https://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z232/Z-trooper/Modelling/Ak5_04.png
https://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z232/Z-trooper/Modelling/AK5_04_2.png

but I dont know when the last video will be up cause there are some problems with the original recording I'll have to deal with.

Also I'll find some links for you cause its not exactly a video for a beginner, I refer to some other tutorials in there for complete beginners for instance a tutorial where you learn to create a Glock 17 (I think) or a Beretta 9000. They are both awesome.

Aww but... Fuck but... AWW SHIT. Now I want to download PR. Dunno if many aussie servers are running it etc though.

And I'm leaving in like a week. D:

well, this stuff isnt in PR yet. it will take a while before its textured, coded, animated and ingame and some of the stuff I'm still learning.

Good work man. I've never tried modeling guns... Maybe I should.

Only point though,  is that I think those models are a little heavy for a multiplayer game. But you're probably planning on making a low-poly version.

no I'm not. Actually all of the models I have displayed here can be used in the bf2 engine. for instance the LMG, is about 3500 triangles, and the top recommended level of detail is 4000 tris. And this one even as a reflex sight.

The 3500 is only for those that use "high" settings, there will be two more models of lower level of detail for "medium" and "low". but thats not pretty to show off at all.

I was going to say, Fred, despite my issues with the way the BF2 engine runs it isn't a bad engine. BF2's problems came from the fact that the patch team didn't actually code the engine and had little prior experience with it.

Oh I wasn't saying that because of the engine, more beacause of the graphical POV (people with slow computers). But if he's making low poly versions everything's fine

Well because this is a graphics forum and not a 3d model forum so I though I'd make them more "fancy", but I could post some clay renders tomorrow.

Use some Ambient Occlusion.
That's always sexy looking.

Not that anyone cares in this section...

but...

The Negev LMG is now ingame (thanks to a fellow modder at the PR site), and the IDF is almost done for PR. The negev was the last big one left, so the IDF army should be up very soon

Here are some editor shots of it, its crappy quality and all, but its there ready for action with reflex sight and all, so expect carnage (unfortunatly the bf2 engine only supports up to 900 rpm even though the Negev has a firerate of 1000 awww)

still some minor tweaks needed but basically the whole IDF is now operational, and most of the branches of the military completed.

IDF will include vehicles like: F-16, Merkava, M1114, M151, Golan MRAP, Apache and a few more vehicles.
IDF will have weapons like, TAR-21 (different versions with M203, Reflex, ACOG...), SR-99, Galil, Negev LMG, LAW-72, Colt Commando, M4...

This theather of operations also introduced the Hamas faction, which is also completed, which I'm also making a new MP5 model for. The vBF2 had sort of a bad reputation for being crappy so a new model will hopefully help with a new weapon feel, but if its not finished soon enough the vBF2 will be used as a placeholder.

Also, it's a good idea as to model in as high a poly-count as you, as a 3d-modeller, can handle. The lower-poly models can generally be automatically generated with a little extra tweakage here and there, and the high-poly models can be used to generate extra detail (such as shading/dirt/etc) on textures.

The 3500 was the highest level of detail model for this weapon, the rest of the models (for different graphic settings/views) is pretty much made using the "optimize" modifyer, with some manual tweaks of cause.

A good texture job can help a "low" poly model along quite good. So can some good bump mapping. The base model's bullets + casing is 4 sided (a box turned on its side), so is the bullets on the SAW from vBF2, but with a good skin job, this is not that noticable - unless you intentionally look for it which most players dont, they actually focus on whats infront of their weapon and not the weapon itself. If you look good enough at any model from most games out there is very possible to spot flat surfaces and stuff like that, the "art" if you will, is to hide this as best as possible and always be creative of finding solutions that can make you do less actual modeling (not that we are lazy at all!) Its actually quite hard to keep it down and still have the most detail as possible in it, and still make the game run smooth in 64 player maps.

chuyskywalker wrote:

Thank you.
And yes, I will. I hope to be a game developer some day, and I'm currently studying "medialogy" at my university. This is basically the science behind different medias, where I focus on "games". I have just finished up my very own game with 4 of my study mates. Well its not actually a finished game yet, more of a proof of concept. Its a highly interactive game that only requires a webcam, much like "EyeToy" from PS. Only this is not a game that focuses on mini games, this is a story sort of "RPG" game in a 2d platform enviroment. The game itself is coded in Flash - but will eventually be developed in its own 3d engine if time/money allows it. The concept works, if you want your character to jump, you jump, run left and right for navigation and for defeting your enemies and grabbing items, well forget about the "Mario" way with jumping on them, you put on some gloves and puch holes into the "blue sky", and beat your enemies to death. Next time we have a test set up in a lab I'll video it so I can show people it, cause even though the Alpha version is done, its not yet ready for distribution.
