Anyone know of any reputable software that is better than the one Windows gives? I've found Auslogics DiskDefrag utility, is it any good?

And does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can speed up my computer without adding new hardware. It seems like these Dell computers have a built in slow down script.

I'd just go through your add/remove programs and get rid of anything that says dell. Also, how much RAM does your system have?

Defrag never really makes a noticeable difference. You only really need to do it if programs start hanging during load. I defrag like once a year maybe, and even then, it's just something to do to waste the time.

Yeah I'm at the end of my whim here, it's disgraceful how slow my computer has become, and it's not a dodgy computer either. The hardware is ok, it runs on Centrino Duo 2.0Ghz and has 1Gb ram. I've only had it for less than 2 years, but it seems maybe the HD is to blame. Whenever I play bf2, for about 5 minutes, the harddrive works 100% and makes the game really jittery, plus just right clicking on an icon after I quit BF2 takes anywhere between 30s to 1 minute to load the context menu. Oh yeah it's a laptop btw.

Not Dell desktops Actually that's being a little unfair, I've also got a top of the range Dell dimension desktop and that's pretty good, although it still has slowed considerably.

What it's doing when the hard drive is going is swapping with the paging file, which is "virtual memory" that is kept on your hdd and works as extra RAM. But since hard drives have way slow seek times compared to RAM, it takes awhile to load it. An extra GB or so of RAM will do the trick here.

AMD Athlon 2800+ running on a FSB of 333Mhz
Ram - 512MB DDR (NOT 2!)
GFX - Nvidea GeForce MX440 64MB DDR (BTW, ITS INTERGRATED!!!!)
40GB Hard drive
4x DVD R

I think that sums it up.....

EDIT: And XP has been installed and used frequently for over 3.5 years!

Nope.  GFX fails.

Diskeeper wins. Defrag once, keep it running in the background so it can do its work, and your drives will always be defragmented.

Defragmenting is very important.
Also I guaranty you that your laptop will speed up drastically if you re-install windows and preferably format your HD.

Diskeeper deffinetly

It does a great job defragmenting and it even runs in the background to prevent it from getting defragmented again.  Its not a resource hog when it runs in the background either.
