What would be, at christmas, the best upgrade for this system:

ASrock dual-VSTA mobo (compatible with both AGP and pci-e)
Corsair twinMOS 2x1GB DDR2 (667 mhz)
ATI x1950pro, 512mb, AGP
Intel C2D 4300 (@2.5GHZ)
Thermaltake Toughpower 600 watts, 48 amps

which components would make the biggest difference in performance if upgraded? and what should I be looking for around christmas to extend the life of my PC till summer '08 for around 4-500 euro's?

Your CPU is probably slowing you down a bit! Get a new CPU and maybe a new video card if you can afford it by Christmas.

Nothing! Your specifications are great. However, if you have to chose something, I will get 8800GTS 320mb...and sell your x1950pro.

I love how he asked for an upgrade (an in one, maybe two) and every single person has suggested a different thing...

And I have no idea how a PS3 or a Wii would upgrade his computer...

CPU, RAM and Video card are going to make the biggest difference.

Without some serious testing, it's hard to say exactly where is bottleneck is, but as Kyle says, it's likely to be your CPU, but the fact you've got an AGP video card isn't helping any.

On the subject of RAM, if you have spare slots, and you motherboard supports it, an upgrade to 4GB will help. And, yes, even if you've got a 32bit OS, 4GB is a viable option. But this is likely to have less effect on performance than a better CPU/GPU.

i would rather see you finally jump on pci-e video card wagon, agp is so outdated, i don't know why they still make it.  but your card should have enough tits to play most games at max right now anyway.  crysis is supposed to come out in november, so i don't know what your abilities with those caliber games will be.  i also wasn't sure they made a mobo that supported agp and pci-e 16.  my next upgrade would be your mobo after your gpu.  but that's just me.

keep in mind that the ASrock dual-VSTA PCI-E slot is limited to 4x so if you are thinking of getting a new Video card, you might just want to spring a few extra bucks for a different motherboard.

Depending on how tight the cash is a new MB, Video card and processor would be where I would spend the money. While it is nice not everyone needs a $200 motherboard or a bleeding edge video card or even a quad core Processor.

What are your goals?? do you need DX10 compatibility? your not going to find much in the mid level DX10 cards that will WOW you over your 1950GT. The 8600GT/GTS and the 2600XT are fine cards, but they just arent HUGE faster than your current video card
