So my mom has this thing about shredding every single thing that has our name and address on it so prevent the possibility of someone "putting together a history on us."  This drives me nuts as it means that I've gotta put every single magazine label, piece of junk mail, birthday card, etc that comes to me in the mail through our crappy little 3 sheet shredder. Now, there are somethings that obviously shouldn't just be chucked carefree into the trash/ recycling (credit cards, bank information, school info, insurance info, etc), but is it really necessary to shred every single thing that has your name and address on it? Dicuss.

My parents recently started shredding stuff. Basically just bills and credit card stuff.

I save all my bank statements and paycheck information, so I don't think there's any need to shred anything. However, if you had to shred stuff, just go with the bank account stuff, driver's license info, and social security number stuff. Home addresses are really no big deal and can probably be found in the phone book.

Dude nothing personal, but you got 1 crazy mom IMO. I mean i never even heard of shredding things with your own name and address on it to prevent 'putting together a history on us.'

bills, credit card offers, insurance shit, anything like that.  stuff with account numbers, PIN codes, SSN.  but shredding your address is nuts, that info is freely avialable online, and at city hall.

Lol, she's not crazy or OCD or anything.  Its just something she has a habit of doing.

Yeah screw this.  I'm just gonna start throwing junk mail and magazines in the recycling lol.  But if i get kidnapped and forced into service in the North Korean army cause they were studying what i threw in the trash, I'm so blaming you guys.

My mom will occasionally rip our address label off a magizine or whatever when were tossing it, but everything important is saved in filing cabinets or a big box of papers.  Then once in a while she'll go through with it, and shred what needs to be shreded.  Mabye a bit paranoid, but as the saying goes "Better safe then sorry"  not like its a huge deal, however identity theft is, and it happens all the time.

Shredding your name and address is a bit nuts IMO.  But really anything more than that (i.e. anything that isn't publicly available) should probably take a trip though the blades.

Now, as far as leaving a paper trail... It is almost unavoidable if you want to lead a somewhat normal life. Unless you live outside of society completely it is in all likely-hood impossible.

Sounds to me like your mother has ocd.

You'd be surprised. My girlfriend's mother's credit card statement was stolen right out of her mailbox a couple months ago and about $700 was charged on the card. It really doesn't take much for some motherfucker to totally exploit you.

I don't know about the "build a history on us" part, but it is a smart thing to shred financial/medical/scholasatic information not needed anymore.
