I'm not talking about ummm MLS?? I dunno what it's called but I play it still easily with friends that actually play it as travel it's not that hard. American Baseball NOT cricket. Being good at baseball takes much skill. Lots in fact.
baseball no skill? lets see here ... if we go with the assumption that people are paid well to do good/skilled work, then baseball would be the sport that requires the most skill. i played baseball in high school and college and soccer in high school, i guarantee the prep for baseball is more intense! not to bash soccer cuz i like the sport, but baseball requires more talent to be successful!!

I love baseball, but without payTV I can't watch any Major League games so I don't know the guys. I don't know why, but I like Houston Astros (not follow or love), probably because they one a good game that I watched. I dunno
I would love to see ,some of you that say it takes no skill, try to hit a fastball that is in the middle to upper 90mph range. Hell I played organized ball untill I was sixteen. The fastest pitcher then might have been able to throw in the low 80mph for a couple of innings but thats it. I would like to see you try stay in the batter box when a breaking ball is coming right at your head and at the last millisecond it grabs the air and curves right across the plate. I would really love to see any of you that says baseball takes no skill try to play third base and stop some really hard hit groundball that is bouncing wildly or one that take a crazy bounce. JG, word. Baseball takes the most skill out of all sports due to the reaction times in the games. In football, you have a few seconds to run to your spot and look for the ball. In basketball, you never loose sight of the ball. In soccer (football), someone is always kicking it around. In baseball, the ball is a white haze. Playing in high school, I batted against Josh Beckett. He was only throwing like at 3/4, but still was hitting 90-92 regularly. Thankfully, I didn't strike out, I grounded back to him, but he overmatched our entire team.JG1567JG wrote:

Baseball players make the most money, because they play for like 5-6 months straight w/o weeks off at a time. They have my respect more than any other sport. You can take a baseball player and put him into nearly any other sport and he can hold his own (not saying they'd be great, but they could play). Take any other sport and put them into baseball. MLB pitchers would make them look like fools.
Plain and simple. Discussion is over. Baseball > everything.

I giggle when people say baseball takes no skill. All sports take some level of skill and of all the sports i've played throughout my life, I would classify golf (even though i'm horrible at golf) and baseball at the top.
as JG stated, I would also love to see some of you hit even an 85mph fastball AND not break a wooden bat. I played baseball my entire life up into the minor leagues, where I got to catch dudes that could throw 95+. Hell, trying to catch that is skill alone!
There are definately a few sports that require the 'touch' too.

I don't know of Beckett at the moment but a google search will take care of that. I didn't play in High School but quit playing Babe Ruth actually at 15. In High School you will have the really good pitchers throwing that hard. I think I could have hit a pitcher throwing that fast when I was 15. I hardly ever struck out. I usually batted lead off just because I was a contact hitter with only average power. Now I cant hardly even hit a 65 mph pitch in the batting cages. Just too out of practice.too_money2007 wrote:

I kinda have to disagree on the point that you could take a baseball player and put him in another sport and he will be ok. Baseball players dont have the conditioning to do the running you have to do in soccor or basketball. They could only play one or two positions in football and probably couldn't take the hits. It's all about what you train and condition your body for. Baseball players are not the most athletic of sports players
It takes extreme skill to hit a 90+ mph, and at 15, it's almost unlikely, but would happen given the law of probabilties. Anyways, baseball players can play other professional sports. It's hard to say that in reverse.
Ya I could see all of these people trying to catch a 95+ mph fastball. Two pitches and they would be whining about their hand hurting. I don't remember off hand the distance from the mound but I think it's 60 ft. The ball gets to the plate in less than one second. A 95mph fastball is travelling at 139.33 fps. that means you have 4 tenths of a second to pick up on the ball, see if its going to be a strike, and swing your bat.Tripp wrote:

It's amazing how, say, Ted Williams would know the pitch when thrown. He could actually read the ball so well, he knew exactly what the pitcher threw. Skill like that is just sick.

Don't get me wrong a good pitcher throwing that hard would own me at the plate, I was a very good contact hitter when I played babe ruth. It would have takeen a little to get my timing down but I think I could have hit 4 of ten fastballs after I miss about 30 straight.too_money2007 wrote:

In reverse Michael Jordan played but wasn't that great. Bo Jackson comes to mind. Hard to say which sport Bo was better at. As Tripp said many Quarterbacks in football make great pitchers. Many have been drafted to professional baseball teams only to go on and play football as a quarterback. I think John Elway was drafted to one of the Pro Baseball Teams.

Well, that's what hitting is - timing. If you're not committed in time, you're not hitting the ball. That's where the professionals take over, as it's the pitcher's job to keep the batter off balance so he can't hit the ball. Anyone can hit a 90 mph fastball if it's piped in there time and time again, but it's difficult to tee off on a 82 mph curve or slider after a 90+ mph fastball.
