my dad recently got a kidney transplant off some guy who OD'ed.  without it my dad would still be on 3 times a week dialysis of 8 hours per day.  now, two months after the operation, everything is going smoothly for him (knock wood).

organ donation definitely improves the quality of lives of some people.

the tricky thing is finding the right match.  blood type has to be a match, and many other factors.  My dad had to wear a beeper for 2 years while he was on the 'list'.  he got called 5-6 times since he was in top 3 on list but somebody else got the organ those times (better match or better candidate whatever).

Well, even if he is in jail, technically I don't see  reason why he shouldn't be able to receive an organ if he meets all conditions (and there are plenty). Afterall, the society that puts him in jail has the obligation to feed him and to keep him healthy.
Technically yes, but call me harsh if you will; that's not the kind of person I'll give my heart to (especially if there is a child on the list below him).

Hell why not, if my organs are still in good use than why not let someone else profit from it? I am not going to use them anymore anyway as soon as I am dead.

I don't think it would be a problem actually if someone needed my organs, it's not that i need them anyway when im dead.. so why not?

They should make it like this.
If you are on a donor list you can also get on recipient list if you need it. If you don't sign up to be a donor in case you die, than you shouldn't be able to receive as well. Of course only for people over 21. Under 21 you are automatically eligible to receive an organ.

Of course it would have to followed by a strong media campaign to inform people about it.

The organ donation system in the UK, like most countries, is based on everyone isn't a donor unless you get a card to say you want to be a donor. 20% of the UK population are on the organ donor list but 70% of people when asked said they'd want their organs used by someone else after they die. To try to sort this discrepancy out, there are plans to change the system to one where everyone IS a donor unless you get a card to opt out. This system has been operating in several European countries such as Austria, Spain and Sweeden.

Is this a good idea? People who have a strong objection can opt out and those who don't care and are too apathetic to bother signing themselves up will now be adding to the potential donors list rather than subtracting from it. The new system should save hundreds of lives a year.

Is this a bad idea? Is this system going to cause problems for deeply religious people who for whatever reason aren't signed up to opt out. Several religions have strict rules against cutting up dead people (I believe Judaism and Sikhism are, but I could be wrong on that). This could lead to problems for them in the afterlife (if you believe their religion) and will certainly cause additional anguish and grief to their loved ones who are already going through a lot. Will it result in doctors not trying as hard to save your life if they think they can reap your organs to save others?

Are we a bunch of Frankenstein esque sickos for cutting bits out of dead people and putting them in living people?
I don't mind this idea, but personally, I'd opt out.  I don't trust the motivations of our medical system.

I know, I would hesitate too.

Anyhow, the surgeon who has to perform the transplant has the last call, and he can refuse a recipient for whatever reason he chooses. Eg. I read a story of a patient in the US who was on the list to receive a kidney, and when he was called to the hospital the surgeon refused to operate on him because he was too old (75+) and had some other problems (diabetes), so the surgeon decided to give the kidney to a younger patient.
