This is how much I pay for socialised medicare per year.

I think it is a very small price to pay for free doctors, subsidised medication, free hospital care etc.

Not a bad deal I think.

Anyone think otherwise...agree...disagree?

Its not my fault I live in Canada.. Well, actually it is.. but thats beside the point..

The point is.. While I do not pay for Medicare Directly, I pay for it with Taxes... But even if you do pay for Medicare Directly, you still paying Taxes anyways..

So in Theory.. I saved myself $704 AUS.

I get hundreds taken out of my check every week, and it pisses me off that a good portion of it goes to a program that i will never benefit from, while the local infastructure crumbles and the educational system collapses.

how many people live in those countries as compared to the US that would make use of such plans?  i'm talking about the older people and chronically sick - not the generally heathy ones.  In the US, we have a huge portion of the population named the baby boomers who were born in the mid 40s to late 50s early 60s.  This generation is now entering the part of life where they will be making more and more use of medical care.  And...i didn't even mention the illegal aliens (all 12 million of them).

do those govts subsidize the development of drugs and procedure development or do they get that from other countries that have to foot the bill themselves?  In the US, it costs on avg about $2B to develop a new drug which includes the actual technical development as well as pushing it through the FDA so we ensure that the drug does what it is supposed to and doesn't have severe side effects.  So if they get the drug that the US company developed, you reap the benefit yet the US drug company has to front the cost.  Of course this would go both ways if drug was developed in France or something.

One other reason we have high health costs in US is that we have huge lawsuits everywhere.  If they passed some sort of limited tort reform, you could keep 'scammers' at bay and also at same time lower insurance premiums that doctors have to pay.  This then lowers the cost to the consumer.  We can argue whether some amount of federal funding might help promote tech development in the drug industry as well - that sounds like a good idea to bring costs down but it also sounds like just pushing the money around.

There are alternatives to the HMO (health maintenance organization) that many of us here belong to.  my company recently allowed us entry into some plan that has health 'accounts' where you can dump money into and it's used in case you need it.  This sounds nice because you aren't paying for some homeless guy to get a sex change but rather it would fund you to get your appendectomy or whatever.

I have heard the term but what is it and how does an HMO work?

the above link has a decent description of HMOs.  pretty much the big beef people might have with them is that if you need specialized care, you need a referral and for anything you do you need to go through the 'network' of doctors within the HMO or else you pay lots of $$$.

i try to stay healthy.  haven't seen a doc in probably 4-5 years.  there's alot people can do in preventative care that unfortunately many are not actively doing (like keeping cholesterol and your weight under control).

$1894.73

That's how much I paid to go see a doctor and have him do little more than scribble on a piece of paper and write me a prescription for Vicoden.

I also paid out of pocket for the pills.

CUBA
Castro: U.S. falsely justifies war on terror

The Bush administration has failed to stop attacks against Americans to justify its war on terrorism, Cuban leader Fidel Castro wrote in an essay.
BY WILL WEISSERT
Associated Press

HAVANA --
Fidel Castro suggested Sunday that Washington has deliberately failed to stop terrorist attacks against Americans because it needed ''to deliver a bang'' that would justify its war on terrorism.

In the latest in a series of essays that Cuba's 80-year-old Maximum leader has begun writing every few days, Castro seized on Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff's comments this past week expressing a ''gut feeling'' that the United States faces an increased risk of attack this summer.

''The government of the United States sees and hears all, with or without legal authority,'' Castro wrote. ``They can prevent any attack on their people, unless there is some imperial need to deliver a bang so that they can carry on with and justify the brutal war which has been declared against the culture, religion, economy and independence of other peoples.''

The accusation came at the end of an essay titled Bush, Health and Education, in which Castro claimed Cubans are better cared for than Americans, and that his poor island nation and its legions of doctors working around Latin America have done more for the region than the United States ever will.

Published in the Communist Party youth newspaper Juventud Rebelde, the essay criticized President Bush for suggesting that recent U.S. initiatives have provided quality medical care to Latin Americans.

''In Cuba, where healthcare is not a commodity, we can do things that Bush cannot even dream of,'' Castro wrote.

Castro criticized the USNS Comfort, a Navy medical ship staffed by hundreds of American doctors and nurses dispatched to treat the poor in Central America, saying it will ``not be able to look after great numbers of people.''

''Bush knows that he is lying and that his tall tales are hard to swallow, but he doesn't care,'' Castro wrote. ``He is confident that if he repeats it a thousand times, many will finally believe him.''

He added that despite Washington's 45-year-old trade embargo, ``Bush is discovering that the economic and political system of his empire cannot compete with Cuba in vital services, such as healthcare and education.''

Castro did not mention the recent U.S. movie Sicko, in which filmmaker Michael Moore compares Cuba's healthcare system favorably to the United States'.

Castro has not been seen in public since announcing on July 31, 2006, that emergency intestinal surgery had forced him to cede power to a provisional government headed by his 76-year-old brother, Raúl.

For weeks now, he has published the frequent essays, known as Reflections of the Commander in Chief, in which he has touched on issues including U.S.-backed plans to use food crops for biofuels, complaints about Cuba's economy and hints about why his recovery from surgery is taking so long.

You had no money for Health Care before Iraq, and you won't have money for that after. Well ..... depends on how your Gov. decide to spend it.

From 2008 US budget ( http://www.gpoaccess.gov/usbudget/fy08/browse.html )

2006 ................... -248 Billion
2007 ................... -244 Billion
2008 ................... -239 Billion

Skip until you have surplus (as projected by your Gov.)

2012 ................... +61 Billion

So what will it be ??? brand new shiny toy for your military, or healthcare for your Boomers???
