I recently upgraded from a Geforce 7300LE to an ATI X1950 pro 512mb.

All worked well (even if shit-looking) with the 7300 and now that I use my 1950 I'm having a minor but very annoying error. At a medium/long range helicopters (attack and transport) as well as jets are only half drawn until you get very close.

I've updated all my drivers and played about with my ingame settings but I've had no luck. If you need a screen shot to understand the error then I'll get one for you, but I really just need some suggestions on how I might go about fixing this error.

Cheers,

Please post a screenshot of the problem. It may be an in-game settings issue, rather than the hardware itself.

New graphics card may need a new install of BF2...but post a SS first as Scorpion0x17 suggested....

Here is an example of it, notice how the vehicles are only half drawn or (in the other screen) not at all drawn at a distance that they SHOULD be (and were before I upgraded)

Example 1:

Hmm... Odd...

Doesn't appear to be your settings.

I've no idea whether this will work, but you could try deleting your shader cache - in My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache\ - just delete everything in there - next time you join a sever it will create the cache...

Hope that helps...

Ok, thanks for the tip. I will try this shortly and tell you if it works.

newest ATI drivers suck! if all else fails roll back to an earlier driver, the new drivers are even conflicting with ET:QW(u can see through walls). IMO it doesnt look like a shader issue, maybe drop ur view distance slightly (like 95%) and see if it still happnens.

Hmm, I have now tried all of the above suggestions apart from the reinstall, but I doubt that is the source of the error because I am having a strange graphical error in TES Oblivion too (which also appeared after my upgrade).

I really am stuck for what to try next.

Did you run driver cleaner pro in safe mode inbetween uninstalling your old drivers and installing your new ones?

No, I didn't. I just used the ATI remove-all-ati-stuff-from-my-pc application.

It won't work trust me.. I've upgraded from a 7300LE to a 7600GT and I have the exact same problem. Try putting your Terrain on low it worked for me but it looks ugly..

I have done this so far:

- Cleaned everything with Drivercleaner pro ( after every install reboot if it asks me so ).
- Changed every setting.. ( Every setting with the result that terrain on low does work ).
- Checked the Nvidia Control panel for settings that I may have applied ( updated drivers so that shouldn't even be possible ).
- Cleared cache and removed My documents/Battlefield2/ folder.
- Re-installed Battlefield 2 and removed everything that had something to do with Battlefield 2.
- Searched every Battlefield 2 forum.

The only thing I haven't done yet is re-installing Windows and such again.. Not that I'm going to do that for just one game.

If you ever found out what was causing it I'd be glad to know it.

I'm not surprised you're stuck - that's a very odd 'error' - I put 'error' because it's not really an error as such - basically the 'draw distance' is too low - it's more like your ATI X1950 is just performing worse than the 7300LE in that one regard.

What's the error in TES Oblivion? similar? or different? could you post a screen shot?

What happens if you change the terrain to high? does it get worse?

What happens if you change the terrain to low? does it get better?

I have foudn that, while setting terrain to high, nothing happens, setting it to low fixes the problem. However, it also makes the game look horrible. Does anybody have any possible ideas about the root of this problem?

Odd indeed, I'm using an x1950 Pro and my draw distance is miles further than that (Driver ver. 8.351.0.0)

I'm assuming you just installed the driver not the whole shitty Catalyst software package as it's genuinely terrible.

If that doesn't work try ATi Omega Drivers (Google it, easy to find).

EDIT: BTW, its a texturing glitch just so you know, its not that the things aren't rendered at that distance it's that it's putting the terrain texture above them.

First screenie is an easy example, see how its put the helipad on top of the chopper? and the runway on top of the J10?, you can see the vehicles around those terrain objects but not on them.

Wow. Well spotted. I hadn't noticed that. That's one wierd glitch. It really just shouldn't be doing that. At all. Ever.

Hmm... does changing the lighting settings make any difference?

Angel - did you say you'd tried reinstalling? anything? somethings? everything?

Indeed, every well spotted Pessimist, I see that now.

I haven't tried a reinstall due to my thinking that it was not a bf2-isolated error, but I have realized that it is and that my Oblivion problem is unrelated. Tomorrow I shall try a reinstall and the lighting settings. What gets me now though is why changing the terrain detail to low fixes the problem. That does, of course, point to the fact that it is a texturing error.

Also, just to note, I am currently using the Omega drivers and thsi does not solve the issue.

Try them, not much different to yours TBH and shouldn't fix anything, I'm using official ATi drivers, no Catalyst software.

It's some odd z depth issue, look REALLY close at the first screen more, you can see the cockpit just starting to fade though the helipad, which means it only happens when the LoD is applied at long distance, either on the helipad or the chopper it's impossible to tell which of the two if not both is glitched. (Thats about where the first LoD boundry is, the other boundry is much further away which is where non-static terrain modles (UAV and such) and moving modles (infantry, vehicles etc) don't get rendered at all.)

(LoD being loss of detail (i.e. shit further away has less detail to it in the wireframe model and the texture skin to improve performance))

Well, I've now tried a reinstall and repatch of bf2 to no avail. What the hell is causing this?

What driver version are you using? What brand of ATI card? Is it the PCIe or AGP version?

According to the ATI website this link is the newest (xp)
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/ … _48640.exe

For Omega Drivers its "Omega Drivers" 3.8.360 (Catalyst 7.4) here
http://www.hwsetup.it/news/puntatore.php?uid=5247

Last thing i'd try would be to re-extract the shaders from ?:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2 Shaders_client, to C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\shaders...you never know...

If you've tried both of these, cleaning up the left-overs after each driver change, and have problems with other games, then i'd have to assume its the card itself, perhaps try returning the card for a replacement?

He already had his terrain on low / medium / high if I'm right? I'd also like to know what is causing this I've tried a lot of things except a complete re-install of Windows.

Cheers for the input, I'm going to try cleaning up the leftover drivers (potentially bits of Nvidia lying around still) and will probably go to the latest ATI drivers (currently using Omega) and also give this shaders thing a go.

I'll update with my results later this evening.

Cheers
