...Just came into Sydney Harbour, and what a sight.

It really is spectacular seeing a super carrier in person. What a display of military might.

Also, the fact that 7000 odd cashed up sailors are going to be off the ship for the first time in, apparently, 6 months, well it aint half bad for the economy.

A carrier battle group will put into a friendly port that can accomodate a carrier and their escorts. Australia, probably because it near their ops area, it an ally port, and the port can handle a ship of the size with ease. where else would our military go for a liberty leave? all the way back to the USA. it would be nice for families etc, but they may only have a week or so liberty. not worth the distance

On topic, wow. Seriously. Superships are an amazing to see up close. I've never been on one, but I have been on one of our Destroyers, and damn, that was impressive. They even let us sit at the firing controls. Enjoy it, cause it's not something you're gonna see too often.

There several carriers in mothballs scheduled for scuttling. At least the navy lists them as available for scuttling. 3 moored at bremerton and 2 moored at Rhode Island. Plus JFK is now decomm'ed. Which leaves the Kitty Hawk as the last US non-nuke carrier in operation.
