It smoothes out edges of buildings and other things.

It makes objects smoother. I'd advise you to put it on.

Try 4x, then go 6x. If you don't notice any lag on 6x, then stay with 6x

anti alias, will kill your fps a bit
not much, if you dont mind sacrificing a few frames for a nicer looking game
go for it.
