IN YOUR MIRROR
+142|6572|CLOSER THAN I APPEAR
hey guys, i am new to photoshop, and this morning i was working on a sniper with a ghille suit.

this is the original photo:
https://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d172/cbury/ef_sniper_gross.jpg

i then opened it in photoshop, and started to carefully erase the background
after about 20 minutes, this is what i got:
https://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d172/cbury/sniper.jpg

I wanted to take the sniper and then move it into a different picture, but I didnt want the background to go with it.  so i figured if i erased all the background i would be able just to move the sniper picture into the new picture.  but i guess i forgot to select in the layer properties to select Color: None.  so now there is a white background instead of having no background.  I just want to know if there was a faster way to erase the background so i can move the sniper into the new picture without the white background.  thanks

Ok well i'm not really sure what your looking for but i hope this helps...

the majic wand tool is very helpful, it selects a colour range that you can change...

heres a tutorial...

http://websitetips.com/articles/photoshop/magicwand/

also if you want to post images with transparency in them, save it as a PNG...

if its your last layer, and you "delete" it will make the area you Deleted your background colour, this happens if your layer is locked...

Easies thing to go is duplicate the layer, (drag the layer over the new layer symbol) and it shouldnt turn whit,

Also if you select the white, go Command (For windows Ctrl, Mac Apple) + shift + I, this inverts your selectoin, selects everthing but what you had selected, so lets say you had everything select but the sniper, and you go Ctrl+Shift+I you'd have the sniper selected...

I hope i helped, if you need more help, just ask...

Select the magic wand tool, click on all the white, press Ctrl + Shift + I  and then copy and paste it to your other doc.

or

Select the pen tool, make it paths only draw around the sniper when done right click on the sniper and go Make selection, you can use AA if you want.

Magic wand tool.
Click the background, press delete, you're done.

Only works with solid backgrounds though. If you have say a picture of a guy standing in front of a tree and the rest of the park behind him, it won't work as well as if he was standing infront of a white back-drop.

The worst tools for Rendering (what you're doing) are the one's mentioned above.  You will get a vague outline but on an image such as this with lots of hair on the ghillie suit.  A better option is the pen tool

Can you copy/paste what your layer palet looks like?
