Well, after "aquiring" Adobe Design Premium CS3 to see what all the fuss was about ive set about updating my dad's website and trying to improve my non existent deisgn / adobe skills.

1. I have a small graphic that says "Contact Us". As you can see it has a background colour and a font. Well i want to make a new one in a matching style (that says something like News or Specials or whatever) and im wondering if there is a way to match the font / size / style? Is there a way i can "edit" the text in the image, or duplicate the font's style?

2. How do i add a kind of "white glow" around images? E.g. See here

3. How would i go about making a transition effect? E.g. you hover your mouse over the image and the glowing image appears?

4. Are there any decent plugins / website enhancements for Dreamweaver i should know about?

Id really appreciate it if some one could guide me though the process of getting these solutions, becuase if someone just posts the finished product i wont be any wiser as to how to do it myself - and i want to learn.

Thanks guys

1. If you do not have the origional file (.PSD), and have no way of getting access to it, then you cannot copy the font style- unless you get it by accident . If you do,m just open the PSD, change the text (or write down the size, colour, font etc used), to keep the style the same.

2. In Photoshop- Right click on the layer in the "Layers" section and click "Blending Options". Tick "Outer Glow"

https://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e305/Titch249/blendop.jpg

3. This would be Javascript- you would need to do all this in the webpage script- you would need to design 2 images, one that would be the normal one, and the other that would appear when you hover over the image.

The code would be something like this....

Javascipt Image Swap

4. Depends what you want to do with it. You can download loads of render packs, font packs etc to help you create your images....

Wow, awesome effort there - thanks.

1. Damn - PS not so clever afterall (though i did highly doubt it) Im gona have a look at Jens guide to make a new set of my own buttons - but im sure ill need some help - so kepp an eye on this thread.... pwetty pwease.

2. Its going wrong allready Do i open PS, make a new canvas? Or just open the picture? Or open a new canvas and then add a layer? Im such a noob... /cry

3. Cool thanks - ill look it up.

4. Im not really sure, maybe something like shout boxes, RSS feeds, trafic monitor.... kinda like addons for the actual website - not the app itself.

Thanks again

EDIT: Ok ive got my layers worked out, but when i add a glow it is around the whole image. Is there a way to specify where to glow (eg only around the text within the image) or do i need the original PSD again?

If you have got the image in a PSD format, then you can open it up in that, and then do as i showed.

If not, you will have to cut the Text off that one layer, put it in a new one, and then blend it- it will be probably be easier just to create you own set of images

If you want to use that image, then you can take the text to a new layer in a number of ways, you can duplicate the layer (right click, duplicate), and then erase the background with an eraser, The magic wand might manage to be able to do it all for you, or you might have to go round the text by using the Polygonal Lasso Tool.... there are other ways, but these are probably the easiest.

Photoshop is only for editing images.... RSS Feeds etc will need to be created in a program such as Dreamweaver (or even Frontpage). You could search for the templates for these on the internet... you might be able to find them.

Photoshop could create the images for the RSS Feeds etc for you... but you can't create the actual RSS Feed etc.

Come again?! When i open the image, under layers it says it is a background. So when i duplicate i get 2 backgrounds and it doesnt seem to work. I tried to make a new layer from background and that too didnt work. Would the process you are trying to explain isolate the text right? Sounds great if i could do it!

Could you have another go at explaining, pretty please. I know its like talking to a brick wall - but i am trying not to be retarded, obviously just not hard enough!

Open the Image
Right click on the Layer, and click Duplicate Layer.
Select the Magic Wand (2nd Row, right hand side button- in the toolbar along the left hand side)
Click anywhere on the large blue area, so it is selected and press "del" (keyboard)
Now make that layer have the glow effect...

You will then have to go around the blue bits that look out of place and delete them manually using the Eraser, or Rectangluar Marquee Tool- but it will be easier to create your own image

Find the BG colour with the eye dropper tool then identify the font using something like this.  Then search for some font sites and download the font, put it on the background colour et voila.

(That's a vague explanation, I'll do you a proper one if you dont understand it after that and when I've got my computer sorted again.

2. How do i add a kind of "white glow" around images? E.g. See here
Once you've made a button like I said above, right click the text layer and choose Blending Options then tick the Outer Glow box.

3. How would i go about making a transition effect? E.g. you hover your mouse over the image and the glowing image appears?
Answered.

4. Are there any decent plugins / website enhancements for Dreamweaver i should know about?

Update!

Tayners magic website actually found the font - "DIN 1451 Engschrift" ill have you know. But searching on the net reveals that it has a surprisingly complex history involving being used on german railways and on a slightly gayer note - you have to pay for it.

Definately time to read Snipys guide on buttons.

Thanks for the offer Tayner, ill have a go myself over the next couple of days (busy with damn Uni personal statements and all that) but if i phail miserably i might come crawling back here for some inspriation.

Thanks again.
