That is stupid. But like Taxt said, they probably didn't want to give away their abilities. And if the ship had attacked, we have 11 more that would be more than happy to have a talk with the Chinese.herrr_smity wrote:

What about that Chinese sub that surfaced near a strike group? One or two subs could disable/sink the carrier, but wouldn't be able to take out the entire group...so that's a nice suicide mission that would seriously hinder any potential enemy's war fighting ability. Since the US could simply send 4 more groups, it seems to be a futile idea.

Couldn't one attach powerful bombs to drift wood(underside) and set it in the course of the group? Then when they come into contact with the ships they detonate.
That's also likely for 2 reasons:herrr_smity wrote:

1) The carrier group wasn't at alert status.
2) There were no friendly submarines with the group at that time.
During a time of war this wouldn't have happened. Also, submarines play these cat and mouse games all the time. You don't start a war when you catch one. If they had known the submarine was stalking them, I don't think they would've immediately blown it out of the water during a time of peace.

Make that the Ea-18. Heavily modified F-18F Super Hornet meant for the navy and electronic warfare. Very badass.Cerpin_Taxt wrote:

b) I can think of ways and means for it to still be accomplished if they were. All you need is the carrier groups bearings and formation + some sort of adhesive for the explosives. Attach on the fly. Might be risky/suicide for the guys in the water but suicide bombing is a fact of modern Islamic extremism...
Cerpin_Taxt is right about the submarine thing. They are one of the few pieces of conventional warfare tech (in terms of sonar, engine noise and tactics) that you can test on an opposing force's equipment from another country and not start a war.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

a port call and a prostitute with the black syphallus
Trained seagulls that fly in and drop off miniature explosives just the size to blow up a jet or one of the Phalanx turrets. After the attack seagulls move in, send in a massive barrage of high altitude aircraft and hundreds of cruise missiles. That should get the job done (and I am actually serious!)
ok heres my plan.
a) mines, deployed whilst the carrier is in close to the shore. for example the big american carriers used to have to moor outside portsmouth harbour in the solent
b) once its hemmed in by mines, march AA guns overland to surround it and supress its air defences.
at which point its a big fat floating target now that its aircraft are useless.
c) fast torpedo boat attacks/missile spam
d) close to gun range for the kill.

now there is a BIG difference between china and Iraq, you see china has this thing called technology and an economy that can sustain an advanced and well trained militaryMajor.League.Infidel wrote:

It'd look good on show.
You do realise that a carrier's only offensive and mean defensive weapon are its fighters, right? How would AA guns suppress the air defenses?
The paradox is only a conflict between reality and your feeling what reality ought to be.

That's why he said Carrier Strike Group. IE, more than one ship.Spark wrote:

China may be further ahead than the Iraqi Military (Let's go with the 1991 Version here, they had a better chance), but their Navy is sorely lacking. Now I'm not saying there wouldn't be casualties in a US/China War, but you have to admit that the US has better equipment and Training. Numerical Advantage hasn't mattered since the [US] Civil War.herrr_smity wrote:

they will stil float even if you put a few .50 rounds in the tube it still has a hull that will keep it up (i know i saw what they did to a target rib and it still was able to drive around at a quick pace)Mekstizzle wrote:

I would refer you all to the book 'Red Storm Rising' by Tom Clancy (don't remember which pages exactly, but if you just skim through the book you should be able to find it pretty quickly) , although his method only takes out the carrier, not the entire strike group (although then again, if you take out the carrier the strike group pretty much becomes a bunch of escort ships without anything to escort)
It would be interesting to see how close they would allow a hijacked passenger plane full of civilians to come to the carrier...
They'd shoot it down if it appeared as if it was on a course to collide with the carrier (Note, the buffer zone around the Carrier I mentioned earlier) In the book "Superhawks: Strikeforce Alpha". Al-Qaeda plans an attack using 12 hijacked aircraft, all of which are shot down by the Navy.coke wrote:

I tend to disagree, by the time of our Civil War weaponry had advanced to far, you had revolvers, lever action rifles, Gatling Guns, mines, and balloons, all of which were used.Major.League.Infidel wrote:

Tell me what an American name is exactly...jord wrote:

That's not a very American name.
I think you all under estimate the power of a torpedo. These are designed to create a giant air pocket under a ship so it breaks in half under its own wieght.
Given this I think you would need a pretty well engineered ship, I dont know exactly how these ships are constructed so It's pretty hard to tell how much damage a torp would do, several torps would put and end to one of those carriers I would say.
