Based on our cumulative experience in Wake Island 2007, 2 J10's could do it, but only if friendly fire was off...otherwise they'd never get off the groundKuSTaV wrote:

The ships would all have to be covered in palm trees, as everyone knows this is the only effective defense against a J10.

Anyone seen "The Sum of All Fears"? They pretty much kicked the hell out of a carrier with a couple of well placed missle shots. True it was sort of a sneak attack, and was jsut the carrier, but it is possible.
Hmm...
A bigger Carrier Strike Group?

Back on topic:
How about high yeild, radio/satellite controlled torpedos launched a couple hundred miles away. Possibility of both accuracy plus minimizes casualties.

I would assume the only other conventional weaponry that could sink one of those fleets, would be a fleet just like it...except from china or india. a place that has a large blue water navy. I am excluding attacks from land (such as artillery) because, well, its a navy, they dont HAVE to be near any land.
id put money down that a chinese equivalent to that fleet could sink it...suffering massive casualties, but thats war.

a couple really quiet Kilo-class Diesel Electric Subs and some nuclear tipped torpedoes. http://www.amazon.com/Nimitz-Class-Patr … 006109594X
You have to wait until a destroyer is on her mothball final run. Then you send a team of mercs disguised as waiters/caters along with a stripper to distract the crew at the Captains birthday party. Then you get your undercover agent merc as acting XO to kill the captain. Then you drug the stripper (but she'll probably escape and hide in some locker), bushwack the crew and lock them in big tank which we'll slowly fill with water. Then we use our a sub which you captured from a failing superpower to -gut the carrier making rail tracks to off load nukes (Battle ships all carry them right?) and hold the world hostage. I'm sure I forgetting one important part.... Oh yea! We just need to remember to kill the fucking chef on the boat.....Cerpin_Taxt wrote:

Those could both do it, easily!
As for real weapons that exist today that aren't built and operated by the United States, I think a massive air attack from not less than 100 jet aircraft with the specific instructions to kamikaze into the battle group. Once the smaller ships have been taken out and the carrier crippled, one's own naval forces could move in and pound away at it from close range. Other than this, the only real way I could see would be to get an aircraft in to drop an EMP bomb on the battle group, tearing away its electronics. Then its simply a matter of closing in and fighting the crippled ships head on.
I don't think the OP meant to include the United States' own weapon systems, because if they did, its a simple matter of sending the B-2's out for a bombing run, then following through with some F-22's and finally just coming in with another carrier group. But of course I don't know why I'm even saying this, because you're going to come back with some excuse like "it doesn't say only non-american technology in the op" or something like that, and I'll make some reply to the effect of what I just said, only being more deliberate in explaining my logic, and then you'll say something completely off the wall, and then we'll all be sick of arguing semantics with you instead of actually debating, and concede. So let me make you happy and concede outright. usmarine's a nutjob, I have no idea what I'm talking about (makes me LOL when it comes to defense tech), you're always right.Bubbalo wrote:

IIRC, in both the book and movie, There is 0 response from the Carrier's Escorts and Air Wing. Hell even in the movie, in one of the panoramic shots, the Carrier is alone AND empty (no crewmen, planes, nothing).r2zoo wrote:

For that reason, all of the systems on a US Navy Vessel run on a Closed System. You would need a physical tap, and there is more than one system, so you'd need several.Sgt.Gene wrote:

Thing is, while the Navies of those countries are large, their equipment just isn't up to par with the US's. They would see the ships from 1,000 miles away and just destroy them before they even picked up the US on Radar.Sentinel wrote:

Movie sucked IMO, book was much better, but as for it being empty, never really understood that. But it does show how the Anit air/anti missle system can be over whelemed and that a carrier is vulnerable. To be honest a bunch of guys running around on deck launching planes isnt much defense agaisnt already airborne aircraft currently attacking. On the flipside carriers are almost always launching various aircraft 24/7 to deter such a thing and for training etc.Major.League.Infidel wrote:

Defeating a carrier group would be nearly impossible directly without massive resources and lives. However striking the homeports of the ships and armorys along with supply lines would effectivly cripple the ships. Without gasoline for the aircraft, what good is your squadrons. Sure a carrier can run for decades on a nuclear reactor, it will run out of drinking water, food, medical supplies, replacement parts and ammunation. No supplies, no fight.
Shame we dont have Battleships in the Navy anymore, sure their obsolete but ill be damned if seeing that beast off your coastline wouldnt make you reconsider attacking
