I have a clearly defined shape. Pure black on a seperate layer, with nothing around it.

I want to use the edges as a path for text like you can do with a pen tool.

now, to save myself a lot of time using the pen tool to make an exact copy of this shape, is there any way I can have it done automatically?

what do I need a mask for? Get the pen tool - draw a nice line with it, then select the text tool and click on the line - voila, you're typing along the nice line

how do I make it type around the edges of the layer I have?

Don't think that's it. That makes a mask, nothing else.
I can't remember by heart but I'll check if i come up with something.

Select it (Magic wand) -> Paths tab on the layer pallete -> Create path from Selection (Icon nuber 4 at the bottom)

Got it.

Select your shape -> right click it with selection tool active -> make work path -> take text tool -> press on the shape
