Do you guys think widescreen LCD monitors could be a dissadvantage on BF2? You can see what other people can't, so you are kind of unfair. They run for about 500$ i think.
maybe , not even sure if bf2 supports the dell 30 inch
If anything, it is a disadvantage. A widescreen monitor displays a nonstandard resolution (instead of 1280x1024, you will have say 1280x800). Look at the resolution specs of the LCD you are looking at. If you play BF2 with this type of monitor, you will end up seeing short fat people like when you see full screen movies squishing into widescreen format.
You're viewing "area" is the same whether you play 800x600 or 1600x1200. Whether or not you can actually see that sniper from 500m out is where the resolution comes in.

The view distance is the one that matters.
Well, yeah of course I meant provided the game will show the enemy to you, whether or not you'd actually be able to identify/shoot it with low low resolution..Ayumiz wrote:

Widescreen monitors have no disadvantage or advantage when it comes to caming. You can use a standard 4:3 resolution in a couple different ways.
You can have it stretch across (looks distorted) or you can have it have it do what widescreen TVs do and just show it at the 4:3 ratio and youll have black bars on the side.
Ive got a 2005FPW and I use the latter method.

oh ffs its not a disadvantage, given the current state of the game, its a disadvantage for widescreen users when they set the sizx/y as it doesnt render the top and bottom you would get with a 4:3 monitor.
i just played it at 1600 1200 stretched, didnt look as good as it could have been but it was alright. i suppose when bf3 comes out or its equivalent they might have gotten with the times.
widescreen is the way forwards (As of this moment ive got a dell 30" on order)

1280 x 1024 is a hideous resolution. Non-standard 5:4 and it distorts shapes, awful for graphic design and it makes working out angles and shapes in FPS games harder than usual.
Steer clear.

Unfortunately that 95% of 17" and 19" LCDs run on this .. I'm OK with my 21" crt until I can afford a 21" LCD that does 1600x1200, or they decide to mainstream a 19" that can do it also..chuckle_hound wrote:

I can't understand how 12*10 became the standard resolution. I mean there must have been someone out there that decided to implement it, admitedlly it was probably a marketing choice (1280*960 doesn't have the double thousands) but as soon as it becomes a standard there's the problem that nobody will realise there's something wrong with it.ninja6o4 wrote:

Meh...
I'm running on a 23" Apple Cinema Display @ 1920x1200. The next lower resolution I can bump my display down to is 1024x768 (stretched image). I do the +szx 1920 +szy 1200 parameter with my shortcut so that I don't have a distorted image, but my game lags now and again... Especially with areas that a lot of action is happening.
As much as I'd like to have a 30" Cinema Display, I know that my machine could not play BF2 very well at 2560x1600.

Let me ask you this, if you were an athlete running a marathon and you bought a pair of shoes that were perfectly molded to your feet would that be cheating? Of course not. But it would give you an advantage, but you spent money to get it.
So why do people who buy widescreen monitors get put at a disadvantage? Instead of gaining FOV you lose vertical screen estate. It's idiotic, you don't penalise someone for having a decent monitor, you let them enjoy the advantages it affords.

say what? 4:3 was used on CRT monitorschuckle_hound wrote:

5:4 is on all but widescreen TFT's and is not distorted at all, unless of course you try and use 1280x960 on a 5:4 screen, or 1280x1024 on a CRT 4:3 screen then yes, it's fucked
i've got 2 19" 1280x1024 5:4 TFT's for doing graphics, and you sir are sadly mistaken, FAR better than using a CRT at 1280x960, or even 2 at that resolution....
it gives you extra pixels to play with, and it deffinately does not distort, if it does, you have something incorrectly setup...

Man, these grapes I'm eating right now made my face pucker up like whoa.
I've just got rid of mine actually. Played @ 1600x1200 just wonderfully.Boots wrote:

This weekend, I installed a 24inch widescreen, and have been playing with 1920x1200 versus 1600x1200 scaled. At the moment, I think I prefer scaling, as it barely stretches and I don't notice is much. At the higher resolution, it lags a bit more than I'd like with lots of people.
Too bad the game doesn't support true widescreening, so I could indeed 'see more'.
Call of Duty and Oblivion are even better in WS.
5:4 is only ever used at 1280 x 1024. Every other resolution from 640 x 480 to 2048 x 1536 is a 4:3 resolution. Don't believe me do the maths.SuB wrote:

1280 x 1024 won't distort on a panel with a native resolution of 1280 - obviously. But for everyone else it'll look weird. And weird is not something I would want on my monitor, especially since I can't go on playing games at 1600 x 1200 forever.
I have a 20in and a 17in and I can see the difference just by maximising a full screen video. Anything recorded from TV at 4:3 displays perfectly on the 20in (native res 1600) but has black bars at the top and bottom on the 17in (1280 native res).
And all that you're getting from that so called extra resolution is a little vertical screen space in games. You're probably losing out on horizontal as online games don't let you cheat on the FOV.
If you want a new widescreen but dont want to drop 500 on a 30 inch, just get this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6824014105
20.1" Widescreen with 8ms response time and 1680x1050 recommended res. Two of those = pwnage. Ordering one next month for my birthday

i play bf2 on a dell 30" with the res set to 2048 1536 > black bars all around but its still plenty enough to have fun.

i have a Dell 21 inch, my settings are on 1164x#### or something like that, i know its 1100! is that ok for me?
The "other best thing" you can do besides resolution, is convert over to DVI. Right now I have a DVI running next to a regular VGA - the difference is stunning. The DVI is so much more crisp & F-A-S-T!!!!!!
I'm running BF2 on my Dell 24" Widescreen
with the commandline options: +widescreen 1 +szx 1920 +szy 1200

Widescreen only shows the menu text and the HUD-map streched
The rest is not streched. You can see that my sniperscope is a normal circle:
