Thanks for saying that.
They are indeed legends.
The hairs on my neck stand on end every time I hear that speech. My own. Let us not forget those souls that perished before that fateful day of D! An in remembering those that made the beach red with life for the strife and tyranny of one. YOU BETTER HOLD YOUR HEAD HIGH ON THIS DAY AN EVERY DAY THERE AFTER. I know I do every time I see the Red White and Blue.
One old Vet answered that question for me.Fen321 wrote:

It was the last "Good " war.
No fuzzy politics, no obscure enemy, no hazy objectives.
His generation had been hardened by the Depression, tempered by the mistakes of the "Great War".
sharpened by their training.
Yet, he told me, they still weren't ready for the reality of the landings.
Then this old man asked if I "Really wanted to know".
He told me what it was like on Juno, in the first wave.
Seeing his Buddies cut down, of not being able to stop and help. For if he did, he would get hit too.
Of his unit in the first wave, 50% were killed or wounded in the first 100 yards.
One of his friends who missed the D-Day landings was sitting there too.
And they joked between them about it.
His friend was in the "Spaghetti League" at the time, fighting in Italy.
" Don't call me a Hero" his friend said
"All the Hero's are still over there".
The man who said that had a Victoria Cross on his chest.
His name was "Smoky" Smith.
Absolute true respect to all soldiers fighting an dying to liberate Europe.
But I for one think that we should also remember the German soldiers now who died in this war. Most of them were also just doing their job.
