If you are going for Dx10 get the 8800, NOT the 8600

Than you will not get a card that will last for 2 years. No card can last for 2 years anyway. I suggest you save your money, make some extra and wait till the fall and then look again for one.

Actually you would probable need to get the greatest card every 6months to hang out in the highend crowd and its shrinking.

OP: You forgot to mention...

Are you replacing a PCI-e video card or an AGP video card? Or is this for an entirely new rig?

No budget card can last for two years. My 6800 Ultra lasted longer than that, but was half-a-grand when I got it in 2004.

budget dx10 is a bad idea. better off getting a better dx9 card. How much money do you have, and what is the card for - if it is for next-gen games (eg crysis) wait till the game comes out, and get more for your money.

Honestly, the new mid-range 8 series cards are bullshit. The 8800GTS 320MB is not far away from a 8600GTS in terms of price but provides 10x better performance.

8800GTS 640MB and the GTX are the only decent DX10 cards out for now.

8600GTS nearly underperforms a dx9 7900GT.

Which is not that bad, as it isn't as expensive as a 7900GT. The 8600GTS is not a bad card, but it somewhat falls behind the 8800GTS 320 way too much as the GTS320 offers an awesome performance/price ratio.

Cheapest 8800GTS is about £175 now in the UK, strongly reccomend you save the extra bit and buy one of them

No matter what you do, dont get the HD2900XT, it sucks, requires a lot of power, more than the GTX and has huge fan noises.

No, no and no. Do not...get an AMD.
Just don't, your reason is invalid and stupid. You like them? How can you like a CPU? It is a piece of metal that makes your computer work at different speeds depending on the core.

C2D >>>> AMD
AMDs are pointless right now and you have no reason why you should get one. 4GB is pointless as well.
An AMD will ALWAYS underperform a C2D. So if you want a rig that is going to last you 2 years or so, you need a C2D. Not an AMD. You got it all wrong here.

look. i love amd, they rock intel any idea. but i bought a core 2 duo processor, why? because i'm not so stupidly loyal that i would pay a higher price for worse performance. buy what is best on the market, and that is core 2 duo.
