The front page of The Age newspaper lept out at me this morning, recent opinion polls conducted show that the 10 year old Howard Government would be swept out of power on the House Of Reps with massive swings towards Labor. If these swings were to happen on election day across the states Liberal and National losses would be quite severe.

Western Australia: 3.7% (2 Seats)
Tasmania: 9.1% (2 Seats)
New South Wales: 9.6% (12 Seats)
Victoria: 10.1% (10 Seats)
South Australia/Northern Territory: 11.6% (6 Seats)
Queensland: 13.2% (17 Seats)

Western Australia: (Hasluck [1.9%], Stirling [2.1%])
Tasmania: (Braddon [1.2%], Bass [2.7%])
New South Wales: (Parramatta [0.9%], Wentworth [2.5%], Lindsay [2.9%], Eden-Monaro [3.3%], Bennelong [4.2%], Dobell [4.8%], Page [5.5%], Paterson [6.1%], Cowper [6.7%], Robertson [6.9%], Hughes [8.5%], Gilmore [9.4%])
Victoria: (Deakin [5.0%], McMillan [5.0%], Corangamite [5.4%]. LaTrobe [5.9%], McEwen [6.5%], Gippsland [7.8%], Higgins [8.8%], Dunkley [9.4%], Kooyong [9.6%], Goldstein [10.1%])
South Australia/Northern Territory: (Kingston [0.1%], Wakefield [0.7%], Makin [1.0%], Solomon [2.9%], Boothby [5.4%], Sturt [6.9%])
Queensland: (Bonner [0.5%], Moreton [2.8%], Blair [5.7%], Herbert [6.2%], Longman [6.7%], Wright [6.8%], Petrie [7.4%], Hinkler [8.2%], Bowman [8.9%] Dickson [8.9%], Dawson [10.0%], Leichhardt [10.3%], Ryan [10.4%], Fisher [11.0%], Forde [11.5%], Wide Bay [12.2%], Fairfax [12.4%])

If these predictions ring true on election day liberals would not only lose government but John Howard, Malcolm Turnbull, Peter Costello, Fran Bailey, Peter McGauran, Christopher Pyne and Mal Brough WILL NOT EVEN BE IN PARLIAMENT.

Even if this swing was halves Labor would still win a majority with 4 more seats than the Liberals, and Malcolm Turnbull and Peter Costello would still lose their seats.

The question I put towards my fellow D&ST posters is do you really think that the Coalition will lose by this margin? Will Labor totally annihilate them? Any commentary on this years election would be good

I think it will be a lot closer than what is being made out. I still think Labour will win but they have to make up so much ground after the Latham disaster. I can’t see Costello losing Higgins. Its blue ribbon Liberal around there i.e. Kooyong, Higgins.
But I do like the sound of Howard being challenged in Bennelong. Only need a small swing against him to lose.

I agree, it will take a small Labor miracle for those Liberal seats to fall. Kooyong are very keen on Petro Giorgio and I don't think there are that many swinging voters in that and Higgins to get rid of Costello and Giorgio.

I still think Howard gets a uphill battle to keep Bennelong from Maxine McKew.

Petro Georgio has been in kooyong for over 25 years and has never held a front bench or cabinet position.

He has lived off the taxpayer for a very long time and has done very little. I guess it’s a low maintenance electorate.

Although lately he has spoken out against his own party against things like refugees, citizenship.

Every politician lives off the taxpayer to a certain extent. His continued presence in the electorate is probably a sign of good faith, that the people of Kooyong are rather happy with their current situation and are happy to have Petro represent them.

The eletorate of Kooyong could also think that Petro is more of a representative of them and his conscience than of the Liberal party, which always gains faith in any electorate.

Labor will have a hard time trying to kick Petro out of Kooyong, however it is hardly an impossible task for them.

I have never seen Labour put a serious candidate in kooyong.

yay, i live in Higgins. Costello seems very unlikely to lose it, i must say.
However, Labor has a very good chance this time around, imho.

Don't get too excited.  Going into the last 2 or 3 elections Howard looked like losing, but he pulls shit that Aussie voters are somehow dumb enough to believe.................................

I tried to find video of the Chaser's "This Person Votes" series, but couldn't.

Voting is mandatory in Australia.

We have had children overboard.

Any other suggestions for Howard?

Interest rate drop?

Mmm. That crap with Rudd's wife has hurt Labor in the eyes of a few though.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

It was illegal, no matter how you look at it, and his wife would have known, being in the business for a long time.

The actions taken by her company were completely legal under the WorkChoices (TM) legislation.

The difference between the two is that Rudd admitted a mistake was made and he felt embrassed and they both worked together to rectify the situation.

If this happened with Howard we would have got the good old blame game, weasel words, "i cant remember", lies and other ways he would have covered it up.

I think we are moving into a new political generation here..........

Thank goodness for it too. We need a shakeup in our major political parties to go with the coalition losing the election.

Too stagnant in my opinion.

Do you guys actually know what benefits were negotiated away?  They don't get overtime pay, but this isn't uncommon in jobs where overtime is regularly worked, and they may not have had it before.  For all we know they considered the extra 45c and hour worth what they lost.

While I think there certainly is a "it's time" factor in the electorate at the moment, it is far too early to call, and to be reading out information on "who will lose their seats". As we've seen before the last two elections, Labor has held polling advantage towards the election, and then as the campaign moves forward, things tighten up, I expect nothing different to happen this time, even if I do happen to hope for a different outcome.

By the way, Petro Georgiou acts in a pivotal way as the conscience of the coalition and I applaud him for the occasions on which he has stood up to the at times Xenophobic policies of the Howard government and won important concessions on issues like Immigration.

The interest rates scare mongering last election was the worsed example of that. Since then interest rates have risen 3 or 4 times. I hope the public aren't fooled by a similar tactic this time around.

I agree about Petro. he has been quite liberal in some of his views.

Latham blew it pretty bad. He came in as a reformist. Nobody wanted reform! Things were going well for the economy.

He did not attack hard enough on Iraq.

The majority of Australians were against Australian troops in Iraq but it not enough to vote Howard out and Latham in.

Legal under WorkChoices, yes, but not as she did it - under the common law.

WorkChoices are the common law.  It's just a name for a reform which altered business legislation.

As far as I'm concerned, the Therese Rein issue has been pretty much been neutralised and rendered irrelevant. In sum total, it did two things, quieten Labor's attacks on businesses that choose to use AWA's, and raised her profile, indirectly raising Kevin Rudd's economic credentials because his wife is such a successful businesswoman.

In the end, that's a net Labor gain.
