• Looking for a touch screen & a program for my Wine Cellar

So... My dad and I just set up our new wine cellar, and found out that the collection has expanded quite a bit (a little over 1000 bottles). We decided that keeping track of all the wine with a computer program would be a good idea, so I am looking a Touch screen with a built-in Computer (Like the iMac, but with a touch screen). Does anything like this exist? If so, links please....

Also, we are planning on hiring a programmer to program a program for us (lol). In the program you can add wines as you get them, and delete as you drink them. You can sort them by manufacturer, Vineyard, year, size, type, quantity, etc etc, as well as being able to search. It would be just like iTunes, without the stuff to the right.

My second question is then, does anybody know how to program a program like this? Is it hard? If I can do it myself, it would be lovely.

Most important is the Touch Screen though...

~Jens

High-tech wine cellar? Pics plz.

Hmm. Normally places that sell cash registers have things along the lines of this. And then if you hire a programmer like you said he could make it so it runs like you want.

You should be able to do this very easily with a program like Access, but i dont know about the touch screen thingy, ill have a look.

I would just buy an ordenary touch screen and then a small pc.

As far as touch screens go, it registers the same as a mouse click.  Behind any button is a Click() event (or PushButton(), or MouseDown(), depending on the language.  When you touch a touch screen it fires this event just as clicking a mouse would.

It wouldn't be hard to setup a small database in Access to do this.  VB .NET 2005 Express is free from Microsoft, as is SQL Server 2005 Express.  You can download these and whip together a simple DB/GUI.

So what is the best program to make it in?

Access?

and btw, I have no programming experience, I only know HTML and basic CSS.

That sounds like an exam scenario heh, but I'm afraid I can't help you out, like what was said, try some sort of dealer who supplies shops with computer stuff.

Ya if you have Access then do it in there.

Setup a table:

Wine_ID (number)
Wine_Name (text)
Wine_Year (number or date)

Drag & Drop these fields onto a form.

Voila!

It would be a simple program, you might try using a PDA to do it on or if you are over coined, a cheap tablet PC (or its mac equivalent).

Access would probally be the easiest and most portable, assuming you own it or have have flexible morals. That and you don't need to be technical to use Access. Might even be an open source equivalent.

When I worked in the AV industry, there was a touch screen manufacturer called Crestron. Kinda buggy at times, but worked ok. Could handle controls for pretty complex things.

While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

There are almost no limitations to what info you can incorporate using access Jens, it`s a database program and it`s searchable to any criteria you have put into it .....

I`m sure there also is some programes especially to record a winecellar.

I recommend a browse on Sourceforge.

Edit: As I thought, a majority is about WINE Is Not an Emulator...

However I found this:
PHP Wine Inventory Management System
Wine cellar inventory program (PHP)

Install Apache and bobsuruncle.

A lazy man's Apache installer is Foxserv (please tell me there's something newer)

I could knock you somethign up using asp.net and using a MySql database, then you could access the program through any browser. About the touchscreen, I have no idea.

Well first I have ne'er seen an all-in-one PC since the 80s (customisation ftw), so if that's what he expects to get he's going to be looking for a long time.

The next best thing is a compact computer in a cabinet, with a regular touchscreen recessed/mounted on the 'door'.

Dimensions will be governed by the Micro-ATX motherboard, CPU heatsink and HDD (reef out the DVD-ROM after you install Windows).
Micro-PSU would also be a plus. Not to mention you can get some tub-of-crap since all its doing is idling til you decide to have a swig.

Also remember that a touch-screen is nowhere near the clarity of an LCD, as you have the touch sensitive film in front of it.

Oh and for the love of god, make the start-up sound the French Canadians, for they 'need their waan!'

Try xampp.

So all input should be done using onscreen keyboard, right?
I would also recommend a small PC, probably a mini-itx, maybe a VIA Epia.
If you use some software like the recommended PHP scripts, you could even use a wlan and check your wine from your living room (if the wlan is possible)

I still say that a tablet PC is over kill ..a PDA running win mobile 5 would do what he wants perfectly

That was the first thing said a few posts back before people were talking about strapping an atx motherboard ot the wall and installing apache.

I see more grabassing for "look at me i program"  attantion than real solutions
